Hi folks, what do we all think is an acceptable amount of mileage to put on the car during a visit for a service?

I ask out of humour but also a bit of annoyance as mine was in today to have the rear tyres changed (after Audi replaced my previous Potenza Sports with something different and which, to be fair to them, they were very reasonable about rectifying).

I got it back earlier with an extra eight miles on the clock and 25 miles knocked off the range, which suggests to me someone took it out for a bit of a joy ride and hammered it around for all of those eight miles...!

Interested to hear people's thoughts on what's acceptable and what would be considered OTT

Drove 8 miles to & from tyre shop.

I had a dealer put mine sideways down a road while I was watching, so I would never let a dealer do more on mine than change the oil and stamp the book. certainly nothing that needs a test drive. Dealer put wrong tyres on mine when I bought it. I sorted the tyres as I wanted and sent them the bill.

Only thing is it doesn't take long idling to bring down the range

Unless you saw them yourself, probably did off-site, but 8 miles is nothing.

That's fair enough.

Always good to get some view from others and a general consensus. I still think they must have hammered it to bring the range down that much in such a short distance regardless of where they drove and why, but I realise there's little way of proving it. Just a bit of a thing for me..!

Did they not reset the counter? because if they did and only did 8 miles well than the average MPG will be off completely.

You may also find that the car was left idling to warm the oil before dropping it, and potentially at other times as well which will make the economy look pretty poor and knock on to the estimated range.

That is what I initially thought but AFAIK he only went in for tyres

As above, if it only went in for tyres I would be asking why they reset the counter?

There is no way of proving anything but if it were mine I would go back in to the dealer and ask why they needed to drive 8 miles and for what purpose. No harm in doing that, not likely to achieve anything as they generally don't give a stuff but I would make them answer the question.

Yep, was only in for tyres (oil service was dine last week but they had to order in the tyres and fit one subsequent day). So the eight miles was done when the car was there solely for fitting tyres.

I expect them to do a mile or two, to make sure all is as it should be but, in my mind at least, eight miles is pushing the limits of acceptability.

I've got a dash cam on my cars. It's always annoying when my old BMW comes back from the place my local garage uses for the MOT with the cables pulled out.

At least Audi don't do that.
