Car is going into Audi next week for first MOT. A reasonable £55.

So I thought I'd ask how much for an oil change £345!

Their hourly rate must be about £250 plus vat

Think I'll get my local garage to do it with oil from Opie Oils.

So 7L+ of oil, genuine filter, and yes most dealers of all makes are around £200+vat. If that is news to you then you haven't been out much recently :grinning:

A good VW specialist who can access the VAG service system is not going to be much less. You can obviously take it anywhere if you are not bothered about service history.

Not that difficult to do yourself on the drive if you want to keep costs down.

I am not a fan of Audi dealers but mine goes in every year for its stamp and I do everything else myself using OEM or better kit, including half way oil changes if needed. £400 for oil service and MOT for an RS car is not bad in my book, tried to service an M or AMG recently?

I'm old..£345 for an old and filter change is ridiculous.

I don't have an M or AMG. But I don't feel any better knowing they charge that much too

I'm not sure how they can do the MOT at that price when it must take longer than an oil change.

Audi often have offers on the service plans around end of October/November. I got 2 services for around £520 last year (MOT not included). Was a no brainer for my RS4

There is a maximum amount laid down for anyone to charge for an MOT of £54.85 which funnily enough is exactly what they charge. To be fair they list it as an OIL 'service' and they do go round the car and check for leaks tyres and brakes etc. You get video evidence of this. It is a bit of a joke but some people need it as I doubt many know where to look even those driving cars like this.

M3 oil service 25 years ago was similar money, Adjusted for inflation it would be nearly double what they are charging.

Technically you only need one every 2 years but not sure I would ever buy a car that has been treated like that. I would also not buy a car that had been serviced at a back street garage at year 4. Would make me wonder what other corners had been cut. Recognised VAG specialist or even DIY wold be less of a problem IMHO, but not some random garage.

I've been around a bit too and agree oil change on a MK1 Escort was much cheaper but so were my other bills. Time and cars move on.

There is cap by the government on how much garages can charge for an MOT which is currently £54.85 for a car.

Thanks. I'll look into that. I asked about the service plan (as my 2 service, service plan had been used up)and was given some number near £800. I was driving at the time so didn't pay attention to the details.

I'm not selling my car. Not unless I win Euromillions

I'm doing annual oil changes (I'm at 13500) regardless of mileage. I have had 2 services on the Audi plan so far. But can't see the vfm getting them to do an oil change. Maybe I'm just tight

It's worth stretching your search radius out for any other local-ish dealers when you book on the website. I've found prices vary by literally hundreds of pounds between dealerships that are only 30 mins apart from each other

Anyone looking to get a service plan read the t&c.. they come with a mileage allowance. If you go over they will charge you. I didnt know this and gut stung £80!0 odd quid

I had my first oil change done last month and it was €389.70 (£339). They called it an 'inspection service' but it's really just an oil change. I also got charged €1 for the video they sent me LOL.

Just to update....the labour was less than an hour at £150+Vat per hour. So that wasn't the issue. It was the 7.1 litres of oil (shell helix) at £18.50+Vat!

Yeah it catches people out but the amount of oil these hold is not a bad thing!

It's not the quantity of oil. It's the fact it's £18.50 plus vat per litre for shell helix u(ltra).

Welcome to Audi! Lol. It's how they manage to pay for the coffee and fancy buildings...

Supply your own oil, it's what I do when it goes in for service. Not all dealers let you though. Would be worth asking.

Yeah they're not doing that.

I do that with my local garage.

Trouble is you are not going to get much change out of £100 for any oil worth putting in that engine. £50-60 quid extra a year on a car worth £60-70K when new is not something I get bothered about to have all the paperwork correct for the car. If I was I would go back to driving a Focus. I just make sure i have 2 coffees and a biscuit :icon thumright:

None of these cars are cars to penny pinch on and I have had most of them, R, RS, M, AMG etc etc. That is why buying one used these days is a minefield because so many run them on a shoestring and it shows.

You're right about the penny pinching, it is a minefield trying to find a good car.
I normally buy the oil through the parts department, they have had some good offers previously, but lately nothing outstanding. I bought 20 litres of Castrol a couple of months back through their eBay store when they were running a promotion. My RS4 takes 9.7 litres so I always make sure I get the 5 litre bottles.

Have you ever heard of Opie Oils? It's £33 for 5 litres. I'm sure Audi are buying it cheaper than that. So nowhere near £100. But don't let facts get in the way.

I get it- you're rich and wasteful with your money. And i guess that's why Audi bend customers over because you'll happily take it and thank them for doing it.

Yes I have, :icon thumright: 5W30 Helix Ultra Pro is currently £59.95 for 5L and £14.95 for 1L of which you would need 3 for an EA855 filter change.

My preferred 5w40 Motul oil is more expensive again but I don't pay OPIE prices, there are cheaper places around. Why not go the whole hog and go to Tesco's for your oil if you do not want to spend anything?

I change my oil in between Audi services, How is that for wasteful money

Good luck when you sell it without history, as it will be lumped with all the other cars run on a shoestring and sold just before they fail. I have always more than recouped the cost of a full dealer service history on every car I have sold including the extra changes on top.

You're right i got the wrong oil. But shouldn't it be 0w30? £55 at Opie (which is really £50 as there's always 10% off)

IMHO 0w30 should go nowhere near these engines, the push to thinner oil is for emissions only and nothing to do with engine health and longevity These engines run hot, especially those fitted with an OPF. They have also been found to have oil starvation in the higher parts of the engine. Audi put 5w40 in my DAZA every year and I am happy about that.

If I was doing it myself I would be running a good ester synthetic 5W40 and an API rating of SP is of more use than the 502/507/509 VAG rating.

These engines are prone to LSPI if laboured hard from low revs an oil API rated as SP will help combat this issue.

Also stay away from Millers Oil with these engines

It is a personal choice, but If i was looking at a car now my ideal would be a full Audi history with other services that Audi refuse to do done at a good recognized VAG independent or DIY with all receipts.

I use Audi to tick the box every year and because I took it off longlife servicing they use 5w40 not 5w30. I do not do the miles to be bothered about the flavour of oil but if on occasion I do I do a change part year myself. I do front and rear diffs that Audi say is filled for life and Haldex (not applicable to your 8Y but I would get the Magna serviced regularly)

I get all gear oils, filters and plugs genuine OEM from Audi or TPS

Okay i was just a bit confused by your comment that 0w30 shouldn't got anywhere near these cars because that is what Audi are using, but at the same time you would only buy a car with full Audi service history.

On the older cars if you take your car off longlife 2 year servicing (which no car should ever be on) they then use 'Special G' 5w40 which is standard oil for yearly service on non-OPF cars

I am not sure what they use for yearly service on DNWA/DNWC engines but lots of 8Y have had 5w30 from Audi. IMHO leaving oil in an engine for 2 years is worse than using the worst oil, but it is easy to change to yearly if you ask or just DIY.

To be clear I am no fan of Audi dealers and some of the service has been shocking. I use the Audi service as bare minimum to tick the box each year then do all other services myself. I have to take it somewhere for MOT so I may as well take it to Audi and drink the coffee.

If I saw a car regularly over serviced by an enthusiast or a recognized independent with receipts for all the proper stuff and scan history, I would have no problem. A car being minimum serviced in a local back street garage on the cheap with the cheapest oil off the internet is a totally different matter.

These cars need servicing by people that know them and have the equipment to do so. At least the muppet that services your car in Audi has a master tech and the whole of ELSA to call on if he gets stuck.

What's wrong with Millers Oil?

What's wrong with Millers Oil?

It does not handle high temperatures well. Most turbo cars, especially the EA855 run hot, especially the oil fed through the turbo. Millers has been known to break down and form a thick sludge which blocks the oil galleries.

Lots of turbo engines reporting this, BMWs and the 4-cyl VAG engines have had most problems. Not just confined to tuned cars either. Plenty of other good oils I would stay away :icon thumright:

Thanks.

I have used Millers oil in my previous cars with no issues, my last one was a tuned S3 8V.

Maybe I was lucky:laugh:

What's the mileage they allow? Didn't realise this but am a lower mileage driver nowadays.
