1. My "coke bottle 18 inch wheels are in original finish, have lasted 10 yrs or so. Now wish to refinish them to original manufacturer standard. Anyone know what that was: with respect to colour, matt, satin, gloss?, and materials: powder coat, lacquer? Originals have lasted well, and current refinishing firms do not seem to be too concerned with my desire for originality in this respect. They may have a point !!

2. Any personal experiences of the Racing Line OEM+ ECU remap product, in use?

Thanks again.

no they're not going to do it while you wait typically the cost is pretty high if you want a professional to repaint them... think hundreds of dollars.. not tens of dollars... your options are paint or powder coating which is a baked on paint.

Did you end up getting a tuning box or did you go for a remap ?

Hi,

Been medically involved for a while, so apologies for late response.

Intend to go ahead in the New Year. Unsure as to what's the sensible thing to do: so car is about to turn 70k miles. Taken some time to check mechanicals: recent plug change shows clean combustion and leakdown test shows no problems. PCV valve will be replaced as new rocker gasket needed to resolve an oil weep. Haldex OK, That done, then plan rolling road to establish what I have, currently. My car has an uprated clutch. Did not realise this until a pal bought a similar car and I could compare. His clutch was feather light and his car seemed to lack grunt.

Bought my car in 2003 as a standard S1, insured as a standard S1. Ignorance on my part would be no excuse, should I fall foul of the law (or insurance company), should the car not be a standard S1. So need to know. Got no issues with the original supplier.

Past Forum reading leads me to believe you made the decision to modify the engine in your S1, so you will know a lot more about this subject than I do.
So, I am an olde bloke, just love the car, have difficulty in abiding with the limits in the car's present state of tune, not prepared to to chuck lots of cash at this project. Would like the thought of 310 bhp and torque figures to match and that's assuming I do have a standard engine in the car, at present. If standard is the case, then a Racing Line OE plus, stage 1, would suit me nicely.

Wondered about the effect of tuning on resale values. Do not know where I am at present and the car will likely be snaffled by a family member, so not a great concern. Insurance for the modified car (310bhp) is less that I pay now!!

Again, apologies for a tardy response and thanks for your interest. Any helpful ideas very welcome.

Sorry to hear you had some problems and hope your over them, I think the S1 engines are pretty robust as I've seen plenty online with some big numbers and mine has done a few more miles than yours and still runs sweet so if you decide to you should be ok. I had a stage 1+ remap done on mine and it came out at 321bhp which isn't massive for these cars but made a significant difference to how it drives. Always good to go with a rolling road IMHO to get a base figure which is, from what I have seen, usually a bit more than claimed. Depending on where you are you should be able to find someone to help, if your anywhere near Sunderland I can definitely recomend the guys who did mine. Mine has a standard clutch and fingers crossed it has been fine although I've never been heavy on clutches. I have no idea about resale values as to be honest I plan on keeping mine for as long as I can, had it coming up 10 years already and hope there's another 10 at least left in it (another older bloke who loves his car). My best advice is service it early, a habit of mine, mine gets serviced about every 6k, has had all the various gearbox/transfer box/diff/haldex fluids replaced at least twice, always use top quality oil, fluid, filters, parts etc and most of all enjoy what I think is a great little car

Thanks for the reply and the good wishes.

My car maintenance regime is very similar to yours - early servicing and annual (2500 mile) oil change. You mention a different driving experience after engine modificaation - can you describe this in more detail? Car values not really an issue and now not even a consideration.

In S Wales so NE expertise is not available, but local bloke comes recommended, so reasonably OK with that. Lastly, considering a brake upgrade and wonder whether you felt a need to do this, after your engine modification.

Again, thanks for your help. Appreciated!!

I still have standard brakes, which I find pretty good, but I am considering maybe trying upgraded pads and discs at the next change but can't quite stretch to a big brake kit ATM and I think this is really only necessary if you are driving hard for a prolonged time for instance if you intend on taking yours on track days, I have no intention of this in mine. The driving experience IMO is better after the remap as the car is now more responsive and has more BHP and torque for the odd occasion when you need that little bit more, the mpg etc is very much the same as standard when driven normally. Any help and advice I can offer is only from my experience with my car as I am no expert, however there are some very knowledgeable helpful people on here who I am sure will help you along the same as they have done for me such as Phazer, he is a great helpful guy with lots of knowledge on these cars.

Many thanks. Use of my car mirrors yours.
