Recently picked my 8Y RS3 and noticed a very faint noise best described as a humming/buzz at 70mph and disappears once you get past 80mph. The noise also goes away when driving under 70mph.

when the car reaches 70mph and I’m pressing accelerator the noise appears to be more noticeable only goes away one I reach 80mph or under 70mph. Happens in all driving modes.

Any help of advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure if it’s the same thing, however in this article they talk about a slight shimmy at around 70mph.

The only issue I noticed concerned the secondary ride. Mind you it’s a minor one: a slight shimmy at around 70mph. I wondered whether it was an issue with my particular car so I mentioned it to Gößl. Apparently not. It’s generated by the resonant frequency of the wheels and tyres. Dialling it out would’ve meant softening off the dampers further, which would’ve had a detrimental consequence on the handling, so leaving it ‘as is’ was a necessary compromise.

I had what I would describe as slight whining noise also around 70 mph in my RS3 8Y (never at slower speeds). It was 100% drivetrain related as the pitch of the sound would change when I changed gears, and be more pronounced when I pushed the car pedal. It would also be louder when the exhaust flaps were open (I had ASR valve control module). I had the car from new and drove around 30.000 km before selling it. The noise was there from the beginning and never got better or worse while I had it, so it was (is) probably a characteristic of the car. I have an 8.5Y now, and I don't notice similar noise though.

i experienced humming noise at a only at a certain speed on a Ford years ago, it was a wheel bearing, beginning to wear.

Hi,

Did you manage to get this resolved. I've had exactly the same issue with my 23 plate Carbon between 50-60 and 70-80. Audi have replaced the complete rear diff which made it disappear for a very short while but now it is back again. They are struggling to work out what the issue is, as they can get it to go away by removing the rear diff fuse, and it is currently with Audi Technical for advice.

Hi, I originally had my car booked into Audi to have the issue looked at however typical 2 days before the car was due in the noise disappears. I decided not take my car in the noise went away for a while but now i can hear it at speeds between 30-40mph and 70-79mph.

Its very strange as the noise only happens when approaching those speeds and only if i press on the accelerator. If i set cruise control on the speeds no noise!.

I did come across a post someone had almost the same issue and by chance they were cleaning the car and he put is rear windows down and back up and the noise went away. I did try that and the noise was almost gone! maybe worth a try.

I do plan on booking my car back into Audi but i’ve got a feeling they will either say the can’t hear anything or its the characteristics of the car.

Our previous 22 model would hum when on some road surfaces, there was a stretch of the A55 where it would do this every time, the first time had me worried but it was so repeatable.

My sons Q7 is very prone to tyre noise, he was convinced the front diff was on it's way out last week, we swapped wheels front to back and it was gone

A long shot but my S3 did this for ages and tried everything including wheel bearings and even a £4k new rear dif and haldex, eventually i noticed a polished ring on one of the rear discs ... Fitted new callipers and discs and its silent on the back now.,

I had an RS3 come from the factory with the wheels not balanced correctly and the dealer admitted as much so that's probably your first step.

One other thing...dont use the launch control. It bangs a huge shock through the drive train from clutches to diff bearings to wheel bearings ,drive shafts and UJ's. I killed my first Diff at 45k miles via launch control. Even no on its 3rd diff if i was to launch it the diff will whine for a few weeks after but i will settle down, TBH its just a toy thing and really not necessary or worth the risk. I would go as far as to say that 90% or whines judders ringing sounds and problems from the rear are launch related.

Hi all, thanks for the replies. It's definitely not Launch Control, we are both a bit old for that!!

It's a very strange one as it has been the same before and after new tyres, Michelin PS4s. They were balanced etc at the very beginning as well to rule that out. The dealer is able to recreate the fault easily in the workshop and stop it by pulling the diff fuse but having replaced the diff completely already, there doesn't seem to be much more progress. It only happens under load and at those speeds. Audi UK asked them to use another RS3 to confirm that it wasn't a "characteristic" which they were able to do. Now with Audi Technical and will be passed to Germany if they can't resolve it. All a bit frustrating but to be fair, Audi Breakdown have provided a Q7 to use in the meantime. Will update you when I know more. Definitely considering the extended warranty in May though with the amount that Audi have spent on it!
