Hi All,

Recently purchased a stock 8Y and looking for advice and thoughts on the right moves to make as I consider my mods.

Been a member on here since my first S3 SB BE back in 2009 and in 2012 I moved up a level to my RS3 8P SB - and TBH I've never looked back - as next up was my 8V SB, and then a 8V Saloon (Daza) and when covid hit I went to the dark side for 6 months with a M4 F82 but quickly returned as a RWD "drivers car" wasn't for me, so when I returned the build time was far too long but I manged to find a TTRS Sport in an audi showroom down south so I opted for the "hairdresser" car :)

In my early days, like many, I was concerned about my warranty when it came to mods so began the journey with tuning boxes and exhaust tweaks. Fast forward to the TTRS and I was stage 2+ with downpipe, opf delete, ECU & gearbox mapping, intercooler, turbo elbow, intake, etc - she was my pride and joy and sounded amazing, pushing about 530 on 99 and maybe 550+ with the odd octane boost and was my daily for almost 4 years!

Anyway onto my new project. My local tuner in Glasgow has a few offerings but being honest I'm not sure where to start and was keen to hear any advice or steps to consider before I make any moves.

When I removed the Sports cats and OPF delete on the TTRS my only frustration was the wastegate rattle - and even though the software had the patch - it didn't fully remove the rattle, so I went back and introduced sports cats from a daza model and that removed the rattle, although toned down the throatiness, but was a necessary compromise for me!!

First thing on my list is to improve the exhaust note - so what should I opt for keeping in mind that wastegate rattle? If I just update the exhaust, I assume dash lights come on? Are they easy to remove?

I've already sorted the Maxton kit, so all good on the cosmetics for now.

A tune will likely be my first step to invalidate this side of the warranty. Am I right in thinking the ECU needs bench work to unlock - meaning once you do this there is no going back? Is it as simple as a remap for stage 1? And then intercooler, induction, turbo elbow, etc and map for stage 2? Also - what increases are expected for each on the 8Y?

Apologies for the lengthy post, but appreciate any feedback from fellow owners :thumbs up:

Hey - I will be able to answer only a few points, but I am afraid wastegate rattle is still a thing on that platform. If you change the exhaust, removing the OPF or removing the cats you'll get a light, but I think you can use an OBD killer to prevent limp mode and that would clear the code as soon as it comes up (if you are not going to tune)

The custom tunes needs femto sort of unlock indeed, but some companies apparently can read your ECU and copy it into a "temp" unlocked ECU that they provide so you can keep driving.

Then they install that temp one and then send your locked one to be unlocked, takes a week for it to come back and you're set, but indeed there is no going back. I recommend the https://www.dimsport.it/en/rapid/rapid-tpm/ if you're not looking for ECU tune and a piggyback. Didn't see any advantages with a JB4, but that's a solution as well if that is what you want.

With the RapidTPM the car went from 402bhp to 452bhp and 528nm to 600nm if that helps.

Enjoy the new car!
