Audi Unveils the Next Generation Q5 e-hybrid Models with More Range, Tech, and Comfort

Audi is taking a bold step forward in the evolution of premium mid-size SUVs with the launch of the new Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro and Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro. These plug-in hybrid models combine the best of Audi engineering: muscular design, quattro all-wheel drive, daily practicality, and progressive electrification. Delivering up to 62 miles of electric range (WLTP) and a combined output of 299 PS (220 kW), the Q5 e-hybrid lineup offers a seamless blend of performance, efficiency, and everyday versatility.

Plug-In Performance Meets Everyday Usability

Under the hood, both Q5 e-hybrid models feature a 2.0 TFSI petrol engine paired with an electric motor to generate robust, responsive power. Accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.2 seconds, the electrified drivetrain is supported by a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and quattro ultra all-wheel drive for dynamic yet comfortable driving.

One standout innovation is the new high-voltage battery. Redesigned for maximum efficiency and energy density, it features a net capacity of 20.7 kWh—a 45% improvement over the previous version. Thanks to a three-phase 11 kW AC charger, the battery can be fully recharged in just 2.5 hours.

Intelligent Drive Modes for Greater Efficiency

Drivers can choose between two primary operating modes: EV mode for all-electric driving and Hybrid mode, where intelligent energy management optimises battery use depending on the journey. A new digital slider in the MMI allows users to set their desired battery charge level before or during a drive.

Audi’s hybrid system is proactive. In hybrid mode, it evaluates navigation data, terrain, and driving behaviour to choose the most efficient energy source. Whether navigating urban streets or highway stretches, the system ensures optimal battery usage and fuel savings.

Regenerative Braking, Elevated

Energy recovery has also been taken to the next level. Regenerative braking now offers three levels of adjustability via steering-wheel paddles, allowing drivers to control deceleration and energy recovery with precision. The vehicle automatically adapts recuperation levels using data from navigation and the Predictive Efficiency Assistant (PEA), maximising regeneration without compromising driving comfort.

In braking scenarios, the electric motor recovers up to 88 kW of power, handling over 90% of deceleration events before the friction brakes engage—ensuring smooth stops and efficient battery charging.

Thoughtfully Upgraded Interior and Features

Inside, both the SUV and Sportback deliver impressive versatility. The fully adjustable rear seat bench plus (standard) can slide and recline to prioritise cargo space or passenger comfort. With seats folded down, the SUV offers up to 1,358 litres of cargo space; the Sportback delivers 1,300 litres.

Standard features include:

  • S sport suspension
  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • MMI experience plus infotainment system
  • Audi sound system
  • Smartphone interface and Audi Application Store
Convenience touches include a larger center console storage area, cooled wireless charging tray, and USB-C ports front and rear. Depending on the trim, the front ports support up to 60W charging, while the rear ports go up to 100W—ideal for laptops or tablets on the go.

Cutting-Edge Battery Technology and Sustainability

The battery's internal layout is a technological leap. Using a cell-to-pack architecture, Audi integrates the cells directly into the housing—reducing size, increasing energy density, and enhancing overall efficiency. Each of the 102 prismatic cells stores significantly more energy than before, and their clever two-tier layout fits snugly into the rear floor.

To reduce environmental impact while maintaining efficiency, the hybrid system prioritises electric charging at speeds above 40 mph and limits battery charging via engine to 75% SoC. To charge beyond this, an external power source is required—encouraging cleaner, plug-in charging habits.

Pricing and Availability

The Audi Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro starts at £56,740 OTR, while the Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro begins at £59,240 OTR. Both models will be available to order in the UK starting July 2025, with initial deliveries set for Q3 2025. Production is based in San José Chiapa, Mexico.

The new Q5 e-hybrid family doesn't just keep up with the times—it defines the future of premium plug-in hybrid SUVs. With smarter technology, longer electric range, and enhanced comfort, Audi has once again raised the bar.
