Do coilovers need to be specific for the RS3 ? Or can we use any MQB ones ?

TL;DR -

Would these work for a 2016 RS3 Sportback being MQB Platform coilovers ?

If not the Bilstein site says they make them for RS3, but I cant find anyone selling them, do I need to pay RS tax ? Does anyone know a supplier or have a link ? Thanks

Can I use any mqb coil overs if I'm looking around at options ?

The full story......

I'm currently investigating a rattling sound at low speeds on my 2016 RS3

Its been to 3 different mechanics who cant pinpoint it, and had a few work bushes changes, but its not been identified or cured yet.

The car has Magride and is lowered on springs the the standard shockers, its on 70k miles and has been lowered the past 20k+ miles

The rattle can come from any of the 4 corners of the car, usually just 1 corner at a time, it seems to move around but front passenger is most common / noticeable.
You cant feel it, the car feels fine to drive, planted. The rattle stops when you pick up speed.
The rattle is worse when I'm on my own ,extra weight seems to make it less noticeable.

One garage suggested dead fit kit, which I am doing, but I'm told by others that the subframe moving would be a single clunk not a rattle.
Friends have told me the top mounts might be to blame but I get no creaking at all steering, its possible but I'm not sure.
I suspect the oem shockers are under more stress lowered, and have done a fair few miles now, it might be that they are all making this rattle sound.

So I'm thinking I might put the car on coil overs, because its £2400+ for 4 shockers, and they might fail again soon after if lowered
I could get B14s to do the job an da mag ride delete set (wow they are over priced for resistor packs!)

TIA

So, did you get the magride zeroed after lowering? If not the magride shocks have been trying to push the car back to its datum height ever since you lowered the car. You can see the error on VCDS but it needs ODIS to correct the datum. If correctly set they work fine with lowered springs

PFL are notoriously hard on joints and mis-set magride will have made it worse.

IMHO replace the worn bushes and joints, set the correct datum for magride and just drive it. If you are set on coilovers then that is another matter but they won't fix the problem if you have worn bushes mounts and joints.

I bought the car like this so i cant be sure. But i do know it has no magride errors logged in vcds so I presume it was set properly.

Im not dead set on coilovers , im dead set on fixing the rattle. By whatever means necessary , its had some worn bushes changed. The rattle is still there.. so I was considering coilovers.

I am driving it. It drives fine. I just want to try snd cure the rattle(s).

Still curious about my original question if all MQB coilovers (s3 mk7 r etc) fit my car or onky rs3 specific ones ?

Thanks for you reply,

It will not bring up errors on VCDS or any other reader, you have to manually compare the module adaption settings with the measuring blocks to see the discrepancy.

Generally they will fit but there are some small differences so I would check with the manufacturer if they will fit. They may just suggest different start settings or spring rates for the different weight balance of the RS3 to the S3/7R especially as it is a PFL

Thanks :)

I will have a look at this, I presume VCDS has the adaptation and measuring block descriptions to help me find them and compare them, but any pointers or links to guides would b appreciated.

So do you think someone may have just thrown the springs on and the shocks have expected the car to be higher and destroyed themselves ?
It would make sense because my rattle can come from any of the 4 corners, although it mostly the front ,and more so the front passenger, it can sometimes be the rear on either side.

If that's the case then coil overs all round is going to be the solution rather than 4 x new OEM magride shocks which i think would be more expensive.

Its going to Zak Kola ( https://www.instagram.com/kolatech_/ )for his opinion / diagnosis this week before I decide what to do.

If I go for coil overs I'm thinking B16 Damptronic might be the way to go. Or B16 + mag ride delete. We will see what Zac says.

I'm not in a massive rush, the rattle is annoying occasionally but the car drives really nice and tight still

It is a while since I have done it because I have a Magride controller on mine now that I can programme on the fly. Just go into 14 and open the module, adaptions and measuring blocks are labelled and the only ones that have measurements in mm. Easy to find :icon thumright:

Kolatec went over the whole car and decided it must be shockers front passenger being the worse one).

So I have decided its magride delete and coil overs time. Ordered some Bilstein PSS , (had them on other cars and been really happy). Managed to get car specific ones for a good price with a discount code. Also Top mounts, deadest kit and subframe bolts.

The delete kits are so expensive for a resistor pack, but also I don't want to do it janky .

Does anyone know the best place to get a good kit for bt ideally not £300+

/edit
I found these
