Hi all,

I want to replace my battery, it's 6 years old now so most likely passed it's best.

The battery I have now for the 170 TDi BRD is a VW / Varta, part number 000 915 105 DG
12V
72 AH
CCA 640 A
380 A DIN - what does this even mean?

However, looking for a replacement, most seem to have higher cold cranking amps (CCA) and Ampere hours (AH)

These ones from Tayna I think will fit, I will check the dimensions first of course....but...they generally seem more powerful batteries, so my concern is - will they do damage to my electrics or starter motor etc?

12 V
90 AH
CCA 800 A

12 V
85 AH
CCA 800 A

Me and electricity have never understood each other whatsoever lol, so hence I want to check to see if the Yuasa or Varta ones from Tayna are or aren't suitable?
When I put my reg number into Tayna, these above show as "recommended"

with where the battery is placed (in the scuttle tray) you are very bound by the size of the battery (not the capacity) so make sure you measure the size of the old one, than compare those dimensions ( height, width, depth) to the possible replacements... slightly higher power on those possible tayna batteries isn't a problem, it'll just mean the car will have plenty of power to run the electrical systems. Also if you would look at another Varta you'll notice that 9 out of 10 times the AH and CCA are now higher simply because of technological improvements over the years.

oww and the 380 DIN is the size format of the battery, which includes the location (and size) of the battery poles and how the battery itself is secured.

Varta ultra dynamic all day long.

This one? This is a wet battery rather than AGM :

12 V
85 AH
CCA 800 A

Mine is about 275mm length, whereas this one is 315mm. The height and width match up....
I reckon I could fit a 315mm length in there though....as there looks like enough wiggle room either side.

I've found this one on Tayna, it's the best Varta one I can get with correct dimensions :

get the Varta they are one of the best car battery manufacturers in the world. They also have very good customer support and their warranty actually covers the full extent of it ( so a 4 year warranty is just that, no problem returning, but it hardly happens)

Yes I have Varta in the Mk4 and the B5.5, Yuasa in the Scoob.

Edit....Just realised that the E44 one is the same one as the MK4 and B5.5 lol, just looked at my Tayna invoices from last year where I replaced both...should've got 3!

Battery just ordered. I've not replaced one on a B7 before, looks like a long 6mm allen for the clamp bolt. Similar set up to the B5.5 pretty much.

Other than date / time, re-programming of the keys, ESP light should go out after a few yards etc.....I'm hoping it will be a smooth swap over.

All done, was heavy to wriggle out and get the new one in place, just a bit awkward. I borrowed a 20cm long 6mm allen with a 3/8 drive...perfect tool for the job.
There's a sturdy brace and two hard brake lines that almost block access to the battery clamp bolt...almost. Glad I had the long allen that's for sure.

Happy to see that the drain under the battery had been removed already. The drain under the brake servo was half blocked so unblocked it. I left it in place but will shove some thick garden wire down there again periodically to keep it clear.

Gave it all a good vacuum / blow out too, although it didn't even really need it to be honest.
The whole area was rust and corrosion free, just a little bit grubby here and there which I cleaned off nicely with BH Surfex HD and a jug of water to rinse.

Only had to set the date and time, and re-program the one touch front windows, the key worked fine. ESP light went out within yards.
