Audi: A New Era
In the 1990s Germany was a country that was still battling with the international perception that it had gained from the devastating Second World War. Now it is a country that is synonymous with efficiency, progress and innovation and a large part of that is down to Audi.
The Germans have always had a good reputation for producing vehicles. In the 1990s though, Audi employed British advertising legend Sir John Hegarty to turn around their commercial fortunes. Upon visiting a factory and seeing an old slogan – Vorsrpung durch technik – he decided to renew the phrase and use it as the basis of all Audi’s future advertising.
The phrase, which means ‘progress through technology’ was a hit and helped to change not only the perceptions of Audi, but Germany itself, from negative to positive particularly with overseas audiences.
Since then Audi has become one of the most-trusted automobile manufacturers on the planet and has really earned the motto of progress through technology. That’s why there’s a lot of optimism surrounding the company’s entrance into F1.
If anything, the sport itself could lay an equal claim to the Vorsrpung durch technik motto, so it will be interesting to see how such a forward thinking and well respected company takes to such a demanding and progress oriented sport.

What this Means for F1 and Audi
This is most definitely a statement of intent from Audi. With the rules changing around electric energy in F1 and Audi’s strong foothold in electric manufacturing, the German company will be hoping to use its entry into the sport as a marketing opportunity.
For F1 itself, the addition of Audi means yet more brand exposure and more eyes. The German company are highly though of around the world and their addition to the sport is sure to be received well by fans.
In addition to that, if Audi take to the sport well and begin to compete with the established names, the added competition will do wonders for F1’s already soaring fortunes.

Will Audi Succeed?
It’s always hard to say at this stage whether a new developer will do well or not. Audi’s success will rest on the outcome of decisions that they have not even taken yet. All we can do however is extrapolate from the available data.
Data that tells us that Audi is a company with a track record for producing high powered, technologically impressive performance vehicles. It is also a company lauded for being at the cutting edge of progress.
Whilst we can’t say for sure that Audi will be a success, we can say with some confidence that they’re better placed than most to take to the F1 like a duck to water.
