I recently noticed that Siri no longer reads my new messages in Carplay (I'm using an iphone 13).

I'm not sure when it stopped but there have been a few IOS updates recently by coincidence.

I've checked all possible settings and even unpaired and re-paired my iphone to Carplay. On a couple of ocassions it briefly read messages but didn't ask if I want to reply. When I tried again it didn't work.

The web is flooded with Carplay issues so I was reluctant to open up a can of worms here so thought I'd start with a simple question. Otherwise my Carplay works fine and haven't had problems so I can live without the reading of messages.

I'm certainly not spending any more time on this since I believe it's an IOS issue so will wait for future updates!

Just wondering if anyone else has had the exact same issue as me.

I have tha basic Audi connect if that makes any difference.

PS One forum comment I read suggested that the new IOS 18 works so Siri will only read new messages when the phone is locked and not in use. I've not yet been able to test this.

Is it just few days or like weeks ago when this happened? I haven't had any issues so far, I'm using iOS 18 on iPhone SE 2022, actually updating to 18.4 while typing this. Though I have no clue about the SMS text messages since I'm practically only using Whatsapp. Siri reads its messages and I can answer them by speaking, within the marigins of Siri's understanding of Finnish. It's funny how it picks even some weird words but doesn't get some of the easy ones right.

No other issues with carplay either. Sometimes there's some temporary glitch with the maps but it's quite rare nowadays, it's clearly gotten better from how it was earlier.

It's difficult to pinpoint but it's weeks rather than days.

I also usually use Whatsapp but still get SMS from work, occasionally while I'm driving which I need to read ASAP, ideally before I get to my normal place of work. Because they don't often come while I'm driving, it's been some weeks since I remember one being announced by Siri anyway.

I previously had an iphone SE which never gave me any problems. I changed to an iphone 13 at the beginning of April. Since then I've had three IOS 18 updates: 18.3.1, 18.3.2 and several days ago 18.4. This makes it hard to say if it was one of the IOS updates or the change to the iphone 13.

I might try resetting the network settings on the iphone at some point when I have lots of time as I'm aware it affects other stuff.

It's a bit annoying but nothing that causes me a big issue since Carplay works fine otherwise.

Might be worth sticking to your iPhone SE!

I'll test how's mine with the SMS messages, haven't had time to do that yet.

I'm gonna use the iPhone SE till the day it dies completely. There are a few things I really appreciate in that phone: It's small enough to be a phone rather than a tablet, and it's got the home button with a fingerprint sensor. I much prefer that over the face recognition for various reasons.

I really liked my old SE, especially the compact size but it started to feel slow and the battery charge was getting shorter. Mind you, now I've got used to the Face Recognition I actually quite like it. I can now keep my gloves on when it's cold and still open the phone.

I think I will try the Reset Network Settings during the coming week/weekend. I just want to make sure I've got the time to reset stuff before I do it.

I've just now re-set the Network settings on my iphone with some success.

At first nothing but after I also re-paired my phone to the car it did read out standard SMS messages. The only thing it didn't do was ask me if I wanted to reply.

I'll check it again tomorrow and if that's still working then this is has proved to be a good solution. Re-setting the network settings was even easier than I was expecting.

I’ve narrowed down the timescale to days rather than weeks. Siri announced a Whatsapp message which I replied to using Siri on 31 March.

Firstly, I changed to my new iphone at the beginning of February, not April as I previously stated so that suggests it’s not a problem related to my new iphone.

There’s been lots of different problems reported with the latest IOS update, which might vary depending on the car maker.

Although I seem to have fixed the SMS messages, Whatsapp no longer works with Siri on my Carplay.

Unfortunately Siri stopped reading any messages automatically again when I tried this morning.

I’m reluctant to do a complete iphone reset just for this problem so will wait and see if a future ISO update fixes it.

Looks like a problem related to some phone models. Mine's still fine after the last iOS update, I used Whatsapp in my car just a moment ago with no problems.

Strange but on my way home this afternoon I did receive a Whatsapp message which Siri read out. Siri didn’t ask if I wanted to reply though. I’m done fiddling with settings.

Update - Issue resolved

Whilst the new IOS update 18.4.1 didn't fix my particular issue with Siri, I did find another solution.

Resetting ALL SETTINGS on my iphone 13 appears to work and Siri now reads new SMS messages and Whatsapp messages when they arrive while I'm driving. I can also use Siri to reply. It's been working how it should now for several days so it looks like this has been a permanent fix. Siri doesn't automatically ask if I want to reply but I'm not worried about that as I can request Siri to reply if I need to.

Having already tried re-setting only Network Settings, I decided to re-set All Settings. This was actually suggested on a forum but because it meant setting up Internet banking and Apple wallet again, amongst other things I wasn't too keen. As long as you carefully follow instructions regarding setting up your internet banking, it should go fine. It's taken me a few days to gradually change various default settings back to how I had them before.

If anyone else is experienceing anything similar with their Apple Carplay, I would strongly recommend doing the reset All Settings rather than waste lots of time looking at other phone settings. Also, always do an iCloud backup beforehand just to be safe.

My music used to load up the Apple Music screen on the mmi each time I got in the car, but since I got a new phone, the music still auto plays when I get in the car but it always goes to the main homepage for CarPlay and I have to click on Apple Music each time, is there a fix for this?

Since yesterday mine's been doing the following: Carplay shows there's a new Whatsapp message. When I tap it on the screen it just instantly asks "do you want to reply?" without reading the message. Even if I tap re-read it's not reading the message. @Simon50s , is this what yours did or was it behaving differently? Anyone else having this problem?

I think mine was doing that as well.

Siri just stopped announcing and reading out SMS and Whatsapp. As mentioned before, the only fix for me was to reset ALL settings on my iphone. It's been working fine ever since then. I never really worked out what caused the problem in the first place.

Ok, thanks! I think I'll see if it will continue this, I'm not very keen on resetting all my phone settings... maybe it just fixes itself. (Reality check: when you hope that, it never happens...)

Weird it occurred now and not earlier. It's been working fine most of the time and lately it's also been more capable in identifying Finnish words. No software updates for the phone lately, unless it's Whatsapp update I just don't know about. Whatsapp, on the other hand, has been *** lately, it doesn't give any sign of new messages nearly every time they come.

It sounds a bit like the bug I had which I was hoping would fix itself but it didn't. I was also reluctant to do the reset and it was a last resort. I had to set up internet banking and Apple pay again which can be a real pain if you don’t do it correctly. The key is to do it when you have lots of time so you don’t rush it. Make a manual icloud backup just in case before you start. Like me, it might be the only thing which which can reslove it.

I happen to have two similar phones, one personal and the other is a work phone. I have both phones connected to the car but mostly only use the personal one when I'm driving. I should do a test if the work phone is doing the same too. At least having two phones makes it much easier to reset the banking apps as I can just swap them to the other phone temporarily. But yes, need the time and right head space for it...

Check those options under settings>AI/Siri.

I had the same issue with messages no longer being read and toggling the options on and off resolved it.

Also does anyone else’s CarPlay no longer go straight to the Apple Music or Spotify app when you first get in the car? Before I got a new iPhone my mmi would go straight to Apple Music app each time I get in the car and play where it left off. Now it just goes to the main CarPlay menu (music still plays automatically but it’s not in the app). Is there a way to change it back?

Had a similar issue, but only on with WhatsApp. iMessages for me have been OK throughout. (IOS 18.5)
Contacted both Apple (as issue happened on a switchover to a new phone) and also WhatsApp.
Various test undertaken with Apple, and determined that as iMessages were reading out OK it was not hardware but WhatsApp related, so off we went..
Turned out to be a known issue with a recent WhatsApp update, but they couldn't say when it would be fixed. (Siri would also not read WhatsApps out on request when not connected to CarPlay either)
WhatsApp had another update last week and is now resolved and reading out as before.
Hope that helps.

I fiddled the settings Creg suggested and looks like it worked. I've only done one test message but at least Siri read it again.

Or then my phone just updated Whatsapp at almost the same time and that's why it started to work again...
