Anyone had to deal with this? I've read lots about it across all sorts of makes and models, but it's usually not quite the same unit as is on this B9.5 RS4 (which I think is 8S0133246D).
It looks like it might be a case of either stretching the spring a bit or adding some copper grease to it. The frustrating thing is that I don't have the kit or space to properly get at it myself so it's going to have to go into the garage where they can ramp it up and take the exhaust down to get at it. At that stage I could probably fix it myself.

I may have understood wrong but it looks like the video is fixing an issue of the flaps rattling around in the exhaust. Mine doesn't flap about, it just makes the noise when the valve opens and closes.

I remember when I went to look at my RS4 and I started it up, the salesman said noise is the flap opening which is why I think its normal. Maybe someone else with an RS4 can confirm if theirs does it and mine could be faulty in some way too.

My car is still quite new so am happy to film mine to see what it does. When the car is idling how do I manually close the valve? I thought the valve was always open at start-up.

It definitely sounds like a lubrication issue in my opinion. I can’t imagine Audi designing their RS4 exhaust and saying, yes that’s how we want the flap to sound when it moves.

I was just switching from Dynamic to Comfort in the Drive Settings while it was idling.

Yeah, I do think it's a lubricant thing which is why it's so frustrating that I can't quite get to it unless I ramp it up and drop the exhaust a bit.

I do wonder if the dealer steam cleaned the underside as part of the pre-sale detailing and that's removed the lubricant.

Ok, I’ll take a short video tomorrow (Saturday) and report back.

Wow, great find on that document, thanks! The audio in the video linked to the document sounds exactly the same as the audio in my video I posted at the top. I'm amazed that they're claiming that awful noise is normal though. The ones on my RS3 never made any noise like that, their operation was pretty silent. Reading through the document I appear to already have the newer control motors (since I have the clip at the bottom). So it sounds like Audi themselves wouldn't do anything.

So it's up to my local specialist to take it apart and figure out if the noise is coming from the motor, the spring or the valve itself and apply a dab of copper grease to it. I'll let you know how it gets on.

I've had it into the garage and they replaced one of the actuators. It seemed to be the source of the noise but they're a sealed unit so there's not much you can do with them. The guys said that once it was separated from the spring that it turns, it wasn't quite so loud, but we think it's vibrating as it turns, which resonates through the spring, valve and exhaust. So as you can see from the video it's a lot quieter now and you can't hear it at all from inside the cabin - it's as it should be. The job was about £250 all in.
