Hi all

I am having a nightmare trying to get a straight answer on the type of engine oil needed in my 2018 RS5 coupe, the handbook does not mention anything and there is no indications around the car whatsoever. Please could somebody confirm what I need please. Based in the UK for ref

TIA

I have an opinion on this, take a seat :grinning:

There has been a push by manufacturers to use thinner oil, it is better for their stats on emissions and economy. It is worse for component life but they do not have the same interest in that. I disagree with the use of thinner oils.

It is not confined to the 2.9T as the 4.0TV8, T2.5TI5 and 4-cyls all suffer the same. There has been concern that oil pressure drops at the top of the engine when hot but this is not where oil pressure is read or monitored. People testing the oil pressure at different areas have found lack of pressure. 2.5I5 and 2.9V6 have had issues with rockers on the VVL cams that could be made worse by lack of oil pressure.

More confusing is if you are on yearly service the standard oil is Special G which is 5w40 but if you are on longlife (and daft enough to leave your oil in for 2 years) they will give you LongLife3 oil 5w30. You may even get 0w30.

Personally I would not touch that longlife stuff with a bargepole. No matter what you put in it you will be better changing it twice as often than sweating what flavour of oil you put in. Only caveat is I would avoid Millers as it has caused some issues in VAG engines. Currently I use Motul 8100 Xpower 5w40 in everything including my RS3 and it is what will go straight in the RS4 if I ever find one:grinning:

TLDR if it were me I would run a good 5w40 and change it at least yearly :icon thumright:

Brilliant thank you

I’ve always stuck with Millers NT+ 5W-40. Even when my RS5 goes into Audi, I take my own oil in (the master tech’s a mate of mine ). Just picked up a 2025 RS3, did the first 1,000 miles and swapped it straight out for the same oil. I keep 10L in the garage now so whichever car needs a service, I’ve always got it on hand.

Be careful with Millers, it has caused problems in several engines particularly the RS3. Millers Nanodrive does not handle heat well and has become sludgy leading to blocked filters and oil galleries leading to oil starvation. It is probably fine on an NA car but not on hot running turbo cars.

Personally I would stay away from it, plenty of other good oils around.

Make sure any oil for the RS3 has an API rating of SP to help combat LSPI
