Hi all,

I've got an A3 8P 1.9Tdi, BXE.
I've recently developed a coolant leak when it started getting below zero here and managed to trace the source of the leak to the metal coolant pipe running across the front of the engine and in to the side of the engine block behind where the thermostat goes in. It only starts leaking overnight when it's been sub-zero and resolves itself after a drive. I've attached some photos of the leak and it seems to be coming from where it fits into the engine block with no obvious cracks. Do you have any opinions on what I could do to stem the leak?

I was thinking of resitting the pipe but it seems like a pain to remove it but perhaps I could try pushing it in without touching the brackets?

Thanks!

Failed seal imho, need to remove & replace the seal & the unit as not worth reusing the old plastic part given you're taking it all out anyway.

I think they're metal pipes but that's gonna be one long and painful job with trying to gain access. Could I seal it from outside as a temporary fix until I have time off work to work on it? Or maybe one of those stop leak things that go in the expansion tank?

Looks plastic to me from the pics.

Its upto you, I'd just swap it out tbh & I would not use anything in the expansion tank as if it gets stuck in the heat exchanger or something else then you're going to have a much bigger issue.

I thought it looked plastic too but someone made a video of swapping it out and theirs was metal. Maybe they upgraded theirs to a metal one.

That's a good point, I'll probably keep topping up coolant until I have spare time to work on it, it's not leaking too much atm. Thanks!
