Well I've had a fun morning... driving through town in the morning traffic and just pulled off at the lights quite casually in slow-moving traffic, when the gearbox clunked heavily and the car jolted like a manual does when stalling (when doing about 4mph), followed by the error message "Gearbox malfunction: you can continue driving". Luckily I was only a couple of miles from home so continued driving back only to find the car was skipping first, third and fifth gears (i.e. only going into second, fourth and sixth).

I got back home and have booked it in immediately with Audi for tomorrow for it to be looked over, likewise have saved the error that was logged in the MyAudi app and have Roadside coming out shortly to run a quick diagnostic.

I've started the car since getting home to see if the error comes up again, but the dash now seems to be clear? Based on that I also did the reset procedure (foot on accelerator, ignition on, keep pedal down for 20-30 secs, ignition off, wait a few mins, start car).

As I say, the car wasn't under much load as we were in slow moving traffic, doesn't get driven hard and hadn't been pushed hard this morning either.

Does anyone have any clues as to what might be going on/have happened?

I've had that message come up on the dash before and the clunk from under the gear selector.
Been in at Audi for a service since it came up and they said they could't find anything. I had a few other messages come up as well and they said nothing was showing to them.

Interesting, thanks very much.

I had the dash light up like a Christmas tree when I first got it and after having driven just 300 miles, where all the electrical systems shut down (pre-sense, sign reading, traction control, etc.) only for it to correct itself when I next turned the engine on and the issue to never return again, so I'm hoping this is just a similar one-off glitch rather than an underlying issue.

Not a pleasant surprise either way!

Mine did something similar when I picked it up. Said something about driving will clear some filter. Again, it fixed itself.

IMHO it is either one 'side' of the gearbox stuck between gears or one 'side' of the clutch overheating and not engaging. My guess is the latter.

One thought is these DSG do not handle stop start well and people think they are like a normal slushbox. The fact that the later emissions crap means they change up to 2nd really quick doesn't help either. Normally the problem happens on the 246 side not the 1357 side

When in traffic 'slipping' it with the brake is bad for a DSG. You are better waiting for a gap, letting your foot completely off and braking again at the end of the gap. Not smooth and very stop-start but better for the gearbox.

In traffic I put mine in manual, lock mine into 1st and shift to 2nd if needed. I never slip or drag the car with the brake. One of the reasons many cars have gone back to the slushboxes like the ZF8

I have had almost the exact issue and have just posted in the B9 forum. I logged the codes and posted in my thread. My incident was pulling out of junction and in second gear it clonked and fell out of gear. I pulled over and restarted and all was fine. I have since reset the codes and had no issues (happened a month ago). I also had abs/tpms failing lights on before hand.

How do you access myaudiapp? I used my OBDElevan to read codes. Assume this is for newer cars? Mines a 2019 under an extended Audi warranty but I haven't had the car from new.

Ive had it 3 or 4 times when reversing out of our path with both cold and warm engine/box, same message but car drives OK

Funnily enough I do that too in prolonged periods of start/stop traffic. I'd just not expect it to be an issue in relatively free moving commuter traffic...

Of course, driving it to Audi for them to look into the issue further, it drove absolutely fine, so I wonder if you're right and it was an overheating/cooling issue (although there were no warnings to suggest that being the case).

With any luck, I'll get a call later and they tell me it looks like the clutch slipped or stuck and it gave the car a moment, but there's no serious underlying issue.

I didn't get a chance to read the codes via OBD11 before handing the car in unfortunately. The myaudi app doesn't give you them, but it did register the warning alert from the dash.

My experience was the same. Pulling off behind a few cars at some lights and it fell out of gear (a bit like someone lifting the clutch off too quickly, causing the car to jolt forward).

Hopefully it's just a one-off...

I've had something similar, only once and didn't get any error messages. It was in 1st gear and felt like it jumped out of gear, bit of a bang and a jolt. I was barely moving, just manouvering around the car park at work.

This was exactly what I experienced, only pulling away at some traffic lights. The car was barely moving and it was very much like a classic learner driver stalling a manual.

Thanks for all the replies, folks. I had it looked into and it seems it was exactly what I had thought and what a few of you said too, with the clutch/gearbox having g a bit of a moment rather than being anything more significant or permanent.

I ran the usual transmission recalibration at home before taking it to Audi, which seemed to help.

Audi looked into the fault code it had thrown up (I didn't get the chance to run a diagnostic at home before handing the car over, stupidly) and carried out whatever setting and adaptations process was required and all seems fine.

The clutch engaging/disengaging is definitely more noticeable now when coming to a stop and pulling away, but I'll take that any day over having it sh!t itself like it did last week!

Can you just run me through how to do that? I have VCDS and did it once on my Golf R but the noise it made scared the living daylights out of me and I wonder if I had done it correctly
