C7 Steering Rack

My steering rack has started making an awful grinding noise anytime the steering wheel is turned, mechanic reckons I need a replacement rack!

I have found a company in glasgow who can supply and fir a recon rack for £1800 inc vat. Has anyone done tis recently and recommend an alternative? £1800 is a quarter of the cars value so i’m reluctant to spend that amount if there is a better way
 
Western power steering over Bristol way, they have eBay too, good reviews.
 
Thanks I saw their ads on ebay, the refurb option works out much cheaper than exchange for some reason so I need to find a garage who can remove the rack and store the car until it is returned.
 
Before you go down that route, just try re moving the steering wheel reach / rake, adjust it all the way in and out for a few times. Just see if that helps. Had a similar issue, absolutely shat myself when I was told (due to the cost). Then took it to a independant for a second opinion and that's what they did. All good now.

Give them a call of you haven't & see why the difference is so much, cause ideally would be good to remove & fit in one job.

They explained that they can't guarantee the old rack will be salvagable so it sort of makes sense, i've offered to sell them my old rack after its swapped out depending on its condition
 
Tried adjusting the reach/rake no difference, i’m charging the battery to rule out any low power potential issues. Car has done 150k so I shouldn’t be too shocked if it has worn out
