After much umming and ahhing, I finally picked up an RS4 Carbon Black on Sunday which will replace my S3 ( will be sad to see it go:cry: ).

I originally wanted a Sonoma Green one (any colour but black, grey or white to be honest) but they're rare and the ones I found people wanted silly money so Navarra Blue it was (same as the S3 incidentally).

It has a much comfier ride than the S3, a lot less wind noise and I even got 32mpg on the drive home! Power delivery is so smooth!!

This one is a one owner from new, 40k on the clock with some extras:
  • Pan roof
  • Red brake calipers
  • Heated steering wheel - would have preferred a non-heated flat bottom one than the massive round bus steering wheel and just wear gloves
  • Sports Exhaust (although I'm yet to find an RS4 Carbon black without this)
  • Comfort and Sound pack
  • Audi Towbar (was used for a bike rack, I won't be using it)
Already done some VCDS tweaks . I don't plan to do many mods, just some dynamic indicators for the mirrors and replace the 'Audi Sport' decals on the wheels as they've been refurbed at some point. I'll ceramic coat it in the spring.

Anyway, some pictures:

Thanks!

Beep on lock and unlock
Comfort indicators flash 4 times instead of 3
Welcome sound (will be turning this off as it masks the exhaust noise on startup :tearsofjoy:)
Traffic Sign Recognition (this needs a firmware update on the front camera though)
Ability to turn off DRL in the MMI
Ability to type on CarPlay whilst the car is moving (some apps dont let you)
Apply handbrake when the engine is turned off (this should have been on from factory)

Loving the new car matey, especially the colour. Interesting VCDS tweaks and a nice selection of options. I need to use VCDS to remove the annoying audible speed warning from the traffic sign recognition. It’s there every time I start the car but I haven’t yet bought a new VCDS cable with spare VIN slots.

Do you have any plans for external mods, or to keep it pretty much standard on the outside?

Congratulations and Well Done on the acquisition of the RS 4. The depth of colour is quite something when viewed in direct sunlight and the external carbon bits are a good compliment. Mine's arrived at the end of Jan and I immediately had a high grade ceramic coating applied to body and wheels, I reckon it's better to have it done sooner rather than later. Only change I have made is to change the outside mirror caps from deep gloss black to oem carbon, otherwise it is a manu spec list car. Enjoying it hugely, I hope you have a likewise experience.
Cheers.

Cheers! Ahh is that because of that regulation that was introduced for speed limits? I think you can buy more VIN slots for your existing cable if you have HEX-V2.

Will keep it mostly standard, I've ordered the dynamic indicators for the mirrors and tempted by the carbon mirror caps like I had on the S3 to match the carbon skirts and splitter.

I want to PPF the glossy black trim by the gear lever too, mines in good condition (needs a minor polish) but I have a habit of putting my glasses on the centre console so it will likely get scratched.

Thank you! Yes the colour is great, the S3 always got compliments when it had been washed, I got the paint looking like glass.

I will definitely be ceramic coating it (gtechniq CSL and Exo) but it might have to be in the spring. The car needs to go back to the dealer as they re-sprayed the front bumper (lacquer was peeling) but they missed 2 bits and need to re-do it. If it comes back in time and the temperatures are OK after its had time to harden, I might try and do it ASAP as the dealership got a lot of scratches out of the paint so it will only need minimal correction.

Where did you get your carbon mirror caps from? There are lots on ebay from China which I don't want, but can't find any OEM ones. It's weird how they didnt put carbon ones on the carbon edition.

Glad you're enjoying yours, the grip and roadholding is something else!!

I would be curious to know if you can do that with VCDS. Do you have a link to the coding? You may need OBD11 to unlock SFD first but not sure if when SFD was introduced in the B9.5 platform. Things like this not as easy as prior to 2019.

Hi, I agree the ride in all modes is so smooth, and the gear changes are rapid and seamless; far removed from the RSQ3s I drove before the RS 4.
The carbon mirror caps are Audi parts, I waited about 3/4 months for them, not cheap, but I wanted to keep the car aligned to Audi build ; there are other non Audi parts available, but why bastardise a well made and much admired car with parts from the Far East ?
MPG will never be an attraction of this model, however I can get on cc set at 60 circa 33mpg on a v good day when driving like a maiden aunt, or 18 mpg when driving progressively the choice is your's.
If you can get a Service Package, you may have to wait until the discount comes around again.

Agree on using genuine parts, they do come up on ebay every now and then so I will wait until they do.

I got 32MPG on the way home after collecting, 1 hour journey and leaving cruise on 70mph and then RS mode for a small section of country road, I thought it was quite impressive.

Yep, I got the service plan when I collected the car, good time for the offer to be available!

Currently getting some quotes to get the glossy black centre console wrapped in PPF, such a stupid place to put glossy black plastic!

@s3mad_dude @flybynite Is this what you meant for the warning from the traffic sign recognition? It doesn't do anything in my car because the camera hasn't been flashed with the correct firmware for sign recognition but might do something in your cars.

No, you have a 2021 car from what I see, a basic speed warning and traffic sign recognition have been in cars for 10 years or more if they has the right camera. What I am talking about is the "Intelligent speed assist" that was mandatory on cars sold from July 2024.

I don't think there is a great deal understood about disabling them and any consequences of doing so.

That’s correct - my vehicle was registered Sept 2024 and I cannot turn off the speed warning. I can turn off the annoying bing bong sound, but you have to do it every time you start the car up. I’ve created a shortcut in the favourites section so I can toggle it off from there. The lane assist is also mandatory to be activated so I need to disable this every time I start the car also. I will take the vehicle to a reputable VCDS coder and arrange for both of these settings to be set to “remember last selection” so that they don’t reset at each start-up.

I always thought the 60k interval to change the engine air filter was too long, so I thought I'd have a look to see what the state was in the air box. Only 6x T25 screws hold it on and they're captive. After 40k miles (with full Audi service history) this was the state of the airbox:

View attachment 1732004873110.jpeg

There was a lot of dirt and debris in the bottom of the air box. Some fly carcasses had made their way into the flexihose which goes to the engine - made me wonder what else got past the filter!

Once cleaned up the filter looked OK, but for the sake of £29 and a trip to Euro Car Parts, I replaced the filter with a Mann branded one (same brand as the one that came out) and hoovered out the airbox.

View attachment 1732005204735.jpeg

MUCH better.

Can't say I've noticed any difference after changing it but it's peace of mind knowing its clean. I think the air box should be checked and cleaned at every 10k miles, then the 60k interval MIGHT make some sense depending on the environment it's driven in.

I also replaced the cabin air filter with a Hengst branded one.

My RS5 one was the same at 23,000 miles :scared2:

When I asked the dealer if it was checked as part of their 149 point check pre selling it to me, he said no, why would we check it when the car only 23,000 miles and 30 months old, I pointed to the Air Filter and said, duh! that's why......... Ended up just changing it myself.

Yeah, you have to pick your battles. The dealer will hide behind the 60k interval even if they don't agree with it, you're better off using any good will you have with the dealer for something else than a £30 filter that you can change yourself

I'm unsure if the pre-facelift RS4 had a spare wheel but my facelift only came with a can of tyre foam and an inflator. The lack of spare wheel was a concern for 2 reasons:
  • If you have a fixable puncture and you use the tyre foam, the tyre is written off and they're not cheap.
  • If the tyre shreds, the foam isn't of any use.
I picked up a second hand space saver wheel from eBay for £85. The tyre is from 2017, but it should be OK as it hasn't been exposed to the elements. It scrubbed up well and applied a coat of wax:

View attachment IMG_0104.jpg

You need a 19" space saver with 125/70/19 tyre. Even though I'm running 20" wheels, the overall height/width with the space saver tyre on the 19" rim is the same as the 20". There are a lot of ET29 wheels with the same tyre spec on eBay, they WON'T fit.

You need a wheel with the following specs:
125/70/19
ET22 (VERY important or you won't clear the front calipers - I have test fitted on the front with my steel brakes)
Audi Part Number: 8W0601027B

IMG 0151

There is plenty of space for the wheel where the battery is, you will need to do away with the cover and tray for the foam and inflator:

View attachment IMG_0150.jpg

There is a tool tray behind the wheel well, but the tools included with the car didn't fit in any of the slots so I left them in their pouch and put them like so:

View attachment IMG_0149.jpg

I've heard there is a tray which will fit the tools and a scissor jack, but it doesn't fit in the RS4 because there are some modules under that tray which stop it fitting.

There is space on either side of the spare wheel to put a scissor jack, but there is also a lot of space behind the right hand side cubby hole. I'm going to put my scissor jack in there and wrap it in some sponge (or get a cloth bag) in to stop it rattling around. You could keep the inflator from the foam kit in the car too, could be handy in an emergency.

View attachment IMG_0152.jpg

For the scissor jack, I had one from a Peugeot lying around (no idea where it's come from as no one in our family has ever owned a Peugeot/Citroen!).

I'm not an expert on scissor jacks, all I know is that this one held the RS4 up for a few days whilst I had a wheel refurbed. I was also getting in and out of the car with it on the jack as I was fitting my dashcam whilst the car was off the road. I've seen this same jack for about £20 on eBay but you'll need some way of cranking it, I've kept a spare 1/2" ratchet with a 17mm socket in the car. Specs below:

I'll be changing mines annually, or at least giving it a good clean with a hoover.

Fitted some proper door warning lights replacing the reflectors in the door.

Very easy to fit (and reversible), remove the T25 screw that is in the middle of the door card, and pop the clips at the bottom of the door with a trim removal tool. The clips just push back on afterwards. You could fish the wire through but I think it would take longer. This took 5 mins per door.

The loom that came with the kit piggybacks off the puddle light so no need to faff with soldering or connecting to the door modules, it's plug and play. It was only £15 with genuine VAG connectors and light units.

The process and kit is the same for the A5.

Remove this screw in the door card:

Where did you get the lights and piggyback loom from? Can you share? Mine’s the same - that’s blatant cost cutting. Shame on you, Audi.

Definitely cost cutting! Least we get the puddle lights but on a £75k+ car, putting the reflectors on is a bit of a joke.

The last car I know to have them from factory was the B6, I retrofitted them to the S3 too but this kit didn’t exist then

This is the kit I used: https://a.aliexpress.com/_EwsVB81

It comes with halogen bulbs, I didn’t feel the need to change them to LED.

Wonder if the wires are long enough for my RS5 Coupe doors as they're a bit bigger than RS4 ones?

Decided to de-chrome the lights with some black vinyl I had lying around. Never understood why Audi left the tail lights with the chrome strip on black edition A4's and it looks weird with the black strip that is on the boot lid. Probably more cost cutting.

If you look around the lights you can see a marker around the chrome bit. I measured this marker (use a tailors tape measure as it's more flexible), cleaned the lights with IPA, cut and stick the vinyl.

To do it properly you would need to open the lights but I didn't want to get into that can of worms.

In the virtual cockpit on the S3 8V, there was an 'Energy Consumers' section which would be a good reminder for if you left the heated mirrors or rear heated window on. This wasn't on the RS4 but was easily enabled with VCDS. I pinched the coding below from another site and it's for a Q7 but they're on the MLB Evo platform as the B9. Cheers to @s3mad_dude for reminding me of this feature.

Coding:
  1. Module 17
  2. Coding
  3. Long Coding
  4. Long Coding Helper
  5. Byte 1
  6. Tick Bit 7 ("Body Computer with efficiency program,Yes")
  7. Exit
  8. Do It

Nice work, getting lots of ideas on when I get another.

My carbon fibre mirror caps came. They're not genuine Audi ones, but they are dry carbon which is what the Audi ones are. The dry carbon ones aren't as bulky as the wet carbon ones which are carbon cap stuck over a normal plastic mirror casing. I like this mod as it's something you can see from inside and outside the car.

IMG 0457

Fitting is very simple:
  1. Carefully lever out the mirror glass. Put some cardboard or a piece of carpet under the mirror in case it falls. The auto dimming glass is £££.
  2. Remove the 2x T10 screws which hold the caps on (see your new caps for which ones to remove).
  3. Lever the caps off from above the indicator light.
  4. Unplug the side assist light.
  5. Press the longer clip on the side assist light to release it. They come out from the exterior of the cap.
  6. Install of the new caps is the reverse of the removal.
I did have to do some minor filing of the aperture of the side assist light on the new caps and one of the screw lugs snapped. The screw lug snapping was my fault for not incrementally screwing the screw in and out to tap the hole. It's nothing that a bit of JB Weld/Epoxy can't fix and the screw isn't really needed anyway but I will sort it as it's annoying me.

IMG 0485

I also changed the indicators to the dynamic type a while back so they match the front indicators. They are much brighter (but not so much that they look out of place) than the stock ones even though the lens is smoked. They also look more stealth.

do you have a link for the mirror caps with side assist ive been looking at sets for the last month but didnt want to buy too cheap a set for poor fitment , those look good mate

I noticed that when opening the door, only the drivers side interior light was coming on, rather than all the interior lights. This can be changed in VCDS so all the lights come on:

46-Central Module Comfort System > Long Coding > Byte 10 > Change light_scenario to not_active (untick) > Do it!

Now I just need a solution so that the interior lights come on when you turn the car off but this seems to be a limitation with keyless start.

I've recently bought an RS4, remarkably similar to the one at the top of this thread. 21 plate, Navarra Blue, Carbon Black. Main difference is I have the white interior. Since you guys mentioned carbon bits, I'm wondering if anyone's been able to do anything with this piece that shows at the end of the bonnet on the B9.5. On my Carbon Black edition it feels like that piece should be either Carbon or Black (like the other two bits I've arrowed). I feel it'd look a lot smarter if it were carbon like the other accents around the front. Searching for carbon parts on the internet gets me plenty of other trims, skirts and other bits, but I wouldn't know what to even call that part!

Congrats on the purchase. Sorry can't help, but if you can take it off, could you wrap it?

Congrats on the motor!

The bottom grilles on the carbon black should already be in carbon fibre so if you don’t have them, then you can definitely purchase those (won’t be cheap). If you don’t have them I can take a picture of mine when I get it back from the dealer (panoramic roof is leaking).

I haven’t seen carbon options for the other parts. If you can get them off you could look into getting them hydrodipped. Wrapping is an option as mentioned but they look like awkward pieces to wrap

Sorry to hear panoramic is leaking. Let us know how you get on once dealer hopefully resolves. It’s well documented on B8 platform, but didn’t realise B9 suffered too, and on a 21 plate. Hopefully nothing more than blocked drainage channel.

In the recent past there has been extensive reporting and resolution on the Q3 forum, I think Audi came up with a formal solution, perhaps worth a look.

It probably is a blocked drain but when I wash the car or it rains heavily, the sun shade for the roof will close so water is getting to the switch/light unit and I can see soapy water marks on the inside of the windscreen from when I washed it - I originally thought the windscreen was leaking as it has been replaced before my ownership.

I could have cleared the blockage (if it is that), but with the roof/light switch acting funny I wanted Audi to fix it.

I bought the car with 40,500m on the clock, AFAIK the sunroof should be serviced every 40k and I was told that if an approved used Audi needs something within 6 months it being sold to the customer, the dealer will resolve it before it's handed over.

I didn't know the sunroof even needed servicing so I didn't question it until I had this problem! I had a '99 Corsa with a sunroof and that never needed any "sunroof servicing"!

I dont know how long it's been leaking for and what damage there is that I can't see. Fortunately the car is garaged most of the time when it's at home and if it's not, it's under the car port.
