Hi all.

I have an issue with my front offside brake squeaking. This issue arises when the brake gets hot and causes a high pitch squeel. It tends to be worse when turning left, but also happens going straight, not noticed it when turning right!
I've had new brakes and pads fitted and also got the back plate replaced, but the squeel is still there. Not sure of the cause, maybe sticky caliper, brake wear sensor rubbing or wheel alignment?

P.S. should have said it is an Audi A5 coupe 2013

Fit some Mintex self-adhesive anti-squeal shims, Martin - available on eBay
Listen to the man above, he has knowledge & experience, shims are your 1st port of call.

I wasn't dismissing what he advised. Just seems strange that it is only 1 brake that squeals at slow speed after a short journey, then stops when I apply brake pressue and returns when pressure is taken off.
Is it worth doing all brakes or just the one that is squealing?

I know you weren't dismissing, just reiterating his input mate

Start with both fronts, Martin.

Apply Mintex anti-squeal shims to the backplate of each front brake pad, both sides!

Alternatively fit some decent brake pads such as Ferodo Eco-Friction that come with a proper anti-sqeal shim.

I use Ferodo Eco-Friction on our TT, RS3 and SQ5 and have ZERO 'brake squeal/noise' issues.*

* And this was after Audi changed brake pads, rotors, calipers and even added a resonator to each 8P RS3 front caliper, which funnily enough didn't work! Any yes, they were told specifically Martin Sander, ex MD Audi UK.

The/your issue is high-speed vibration between caliper-piston (s) and brake pad (s) and that is what you hear, a high-speed vibration - 'squeal.'

You need to dampen that 'hard' contact! Simples...

Mine seems worse when driving below 40mph, not at high speed. It's also louder when I turn left but not there when I turn right!

Go search my 8P RS3 threads and you'll find exactly the same...

Take yer pads out and you'll find metal-to-metal contact and there's the point of yer noise. It's not clever, very old school. Mintex produce/manufacture/sell an anti-squeal shim for a very simple reason.

Cheers mate. You guys have been a big help on here, the noise is worse then listening to my ex whine on!!!! Think I will get a mechanic to do it though, not sure I'm confident enough to do it myself. Would probably forget something simple and create a bigger expense!!!

So, had a look at my brake pads and they look like they already have some rubber/silicone shims attached!

Usually fairly rubbish ones tbh, clean then of, fit new ones, it's a common issue, I have one side on my S3 345 calipers, need to shim them at some point.

If you can move forward & you get a little clonk, then reverse & clonk, it's a tell take sign it needs shims.

Cheers. Makes sense that it could be this. When I apply pressure to brakes, the noise goes but returns when I take my foot off pedal. Is it normal that the squeal doesn't happen until things heat/dry up? On a damp day it will be fine for half an hour or so!

Low speed light-pedal allows the pad to foat/virate and it's the 'vibrate' you hear.

5 to 0mph is 8P RS3 (and Aston DB7 + Subaru + EVO 7) classic! All have the same issue! All use the same caliper.

You just gotta stop yer pads dancing in the caliper and rattling the pistion/s loose on light pedal loads.

And just cos one caliper does it doesn't mean to say the other one will, all depends on 'fit.'

Sorry, but if you don't get your probl;em/solution by now Martin then ear plugs...

I'm getting it! I just like to understand as much as possible. You guys have been pretty sound and I'd rather learn then just say I will change it. I will now be able to hopefully help someone in the future knowing why.

Back again guys!!
So replaced the shims with Mintex shims, but squeal is still there. I'm wondering if it could be something else.
The noise (high pitch squeal, like metal rubbing against metal) will normally start after 10mins of driving, at 1st it only happens when making a sharpish left turn but as time goes on it starts doing it while going straight (almost like something is getting dryer and dryer) but never heard it when turning right. The sound is not heard once over 45mph (but could still be there, hidden by road/engine noise) and disappears at very low speed. When the car has been parked for a while, it is not there again until after 10 mins driving.

Hi Martin, sorry to hear this.

Did you apply Ceratec or Copperslip to the back of the shim when fitting like so:

MINTEX 1

Used the mintex ceratec. I don't believe it is the pads. I'm going to drive until I hear the noise and jack car up straight away to investigate
