2017 C7.5 A6 Black Ed 2.0 Ultra 190 TDI
Bought At the beginning of April 2024 by me with 60k miles on the clock. 7 spd DSG and 20s.

Looks to have been serviced as per schedule by Audi (although I expect it hasn’t had a fuel filter done yet).
In my ownership already I’ve done new pads all round and replaced the nearly black air filter.

I’m into it now for just over 1,000 miles. Most used for commute down a dual carriageway. Am noticing fan run on (presumably due to regen) at least twice per tank of fuel.
The first couple of tanks averaged 30mpg - that was based on a fill from full to empty and actually correlates with the DIS.

I’m 80 miles into a full tank of V-Power with a dose of Archoil D Max in it, hoping that it might do some good.
Am I going to have to work it a bit harder?
I’m not expecting 70mpg but mid to high 40s would be nice.

I'd say that's a little low. I don't know the engine in particular, but there's an older thread on the same subject.

Everything being equal, rule out any potential issues. Brakes not hot to touch. You're not running with a Thule roof box on are you? Not uncommon to get seized brake pistons at this kind of age. Not sure how much the 20" wheels will impact efficiency, but check tyre pressures and tyre wear too. The fuel filter will undoubtedly help. Should be done every 20k miles. I've used a can of Forte conditioner through diesels before when the filter was in the engine bay, but you could do the same with the fuel light on and drive it hard for a few miles. Ideally you need VCDS to prime the new filter. Mann or Audi - chances are they make the filter anyway. With VCDS I normally run two sessions of 30 seconds to prime. You might be able to use the fuel pump on the car if you have a trickle battery charger if you're doing it a few times.

If you have access to VCDS - run a diagnostic to see if there's any logged errors. Dare I say you investigate the EGR valve for a closer look would be my next step.

fans run for a good 30mins after most runs.. Mine is a 2016 version and it averages 40mpg tbf the size of the car and the age I wouldn't expect much more.. I find I get better consumption in sport mode than standard mode

Fans should not be running for that long after most runs, unless you are driving like an F1 driver in a Grand Prix or the car is doing a DPF regen. I suspect it is more likely to be the latter :) and that would impact fuel consumption. Are you noticing an acrid burning smell when you get out of the car and also are the idle revs typically at about 1000-1100 rpm rather than around 800 rpm? If so it is doing a region. If you have access to VDCS or similar you should be able to see what the region status on the DPF is and also how full it is.

Deffo sounds like an Emissions issue. If you don’t have VCDS you can find soot levels with Carista.

My car (same engine, era) but with 18 inch wheels averages 50-60mpg on a run and the DPF regen is roughly every 3-400 miles.

The start stop syatem also does not kick in when a regen is going on, just look at your revs and the best thing to do is put it in manual mode and drive around with the revs at about 2k, it will soon clear and be fine.
