Well, think this will be my third Audi I’ve had on this site now. Sold my hibiscus red B5 TQS last week, and already had my eye on Jason Burgess DTM. I said to my wife at Oulton Park 2 years ago, having seen a DTM for sale for £10k, that was the only car I’d consider swapping the TQS for. And I’ve been browsing ever since trying to find one that fits my wallet and my expectations. And here it is. Had to be Blue for me, and with no horrendous modifications done to it. Standard would have been good, but sensible mods I’d have done anyway would be good too. Just driven it back from Reading to Manchester and it was a great drive in honesty.

I’ll do more of a spec again, plus a list of initial jobs I want to get sorted. But for now, initial pictures.

Glad you enjoyed the journey home and it was nice to meet you. Seriously was questioning my decision to sell but I’ve set myself a goal to purchase another fast Audi so gives me something to look forward to. Look forward to the cars journey going forward.

So far so good this month. Getting through a few small jobs. I’ll post update pics next week when I’ve had the bumper off.
However……

I’m struggling not having access to my iPhone Playlist.
So school me………
I’ve for a 1st Gen RNS-E currently, which as I understand it won’t do Bluetooth streaming. For that I need an RNS-E 2nd Gen plus a modulated unit for that function?
Has anybody here done the 2nd Gen retrofit? Swapped the fascia over?
Pics of the intricate bits being executed? I always prefer to check out the job before I commit to it.

Have you considered updating to another aftermarket HU with all the tech built-in and ready to go.
RNS-E is ok but is a very dated audio setup now and with so many excellent aftermarket options available most guys just go that route now.

Yeah i am looking over both options. I just dont want to lose the Bose setup and also the steering wheel controls. I remember from old only certain aftermarket units interchanged and adapter leads were required etc.
I do like the prospect of it looking OEM if I’m honest. But….if an aftermarket is possible and keeps all function then that may be the answer.

There are andriod units that look like the RNSE radio with all the bells and whistles you can think of of you want to keep it looking OEM. I did my research on these units and you want at least 2gb of ram and 32gb for the rest... just look on aliexpress and type in Audi RNSE andriod... andriod os on those models highest I have seen was andriod 11.

And make sure you check what 8s optional as they can come with DAB+/Digital TV/TPMS/front and rear dash cam with recording/ steering wheel controls /satnav/wireless 4g connection/wifi/remote control.

But most of those options are at extra costs. And it might he cheaper to just buy a big brand aftermarket headunit with the same options.

Lots of fitting kits out there if you go aftermarket .
I have an alpine hu with a connects2 fitting kit etc, full Bose that works fine.

with the right bezel aftermarket units look fine, i wouldn't go back to the RNS-E now.
My Alpine does all i need plus so much more and is fast too.

So can the steering wheel controls and Bose setup be kept with the aftermarket CarPlay screens?

Reactions: northpole
yes, depending on whats configured.
most new hu's have voice control anyway for many functions.

Aftermarket for the win… So much better than the nearly 20 year old RNS-E headunits.
I recently changed from a top spec 2016 Kenwood over to the latest Alpine, well worth the upgrade.

Most owners that go aftermarket with the right fitting kit retain steering wheel control for volume and track selection as a minimum, but not all info is retained on the DIS

If memory serves me , I think there are currently 4 b7 members that have the same alpine iLX hu fitted .

The only thing you loose is the small read out on the DIS. Get the right adapters and the steering wheel controls will work fine.
The benefits of CarPlay/ Android Auto, nice big colour screen, better sound quality, lossless steaming etc far out weigh that small display on the dashboard.

And wireless CarPlay or usb connection, well with the alpine unit.

I'll be selling my Sony XAV-AX5650 CarPlay HU soon, I have the same fascia kit as Rob with a Connects2 loom, steering wheel function and Bose.
I did have the RNSE union with a bluetooth kit at one point but the aftermarket route is the way to go.

Did quite a bit of research last night, and well, yeah it’s looking like an aftermarket. I have a completely left field manufacturer though that quite a few of my friends use, and have had longevity out of. So going to go visit and mess about with the screens they have, make sure I like the functionality.

Managed to wash the DTM last weekend for the couple minutes it wasn’t raining. Comes up well really. Bumper off this week, badge refresh, headlights out for a run down and polish, all new bulbs. Spent a good amount of time with 3 different wheel cleaners to try and recover these alloys, I can’t quite afford a wheel refurb at this point. Debt man next Saturday followed by Oulton Park on Sunday.

Just make sure that if it isn't a big brand but an andriod or wince based headunit they are all Chinese made same manufacturer anyway even the well known Erisin, Eonon, Joying etc etc.

And for those make sure you get the highest available ram version as that is what dictates how fast it starts... wince models are quick with just 2GB ram, andriod versions well the later the OS the more ram it needs so if there is a 4 or 8GB version always pick the highest one. (It'll be more expensive but you'll thank yourself later)

Started to make a bit of progress this week, parcels been arriving etc.

I prefer (don’t hate me Jason), the original badging. So the A4 and 2.0T badge were purchased, and managed to find a rest as well. So it’s back to how it came from factory now. But…..Audi badges on this one I went a little different. The rear one I’ve bought the correct size, and sprayed then lacquered it in gun metal grey. I’ve also don’t the front one, which I’ll fit this week. This week is front bumper off time, so be easier then.

I’ve also had the dent man take care of all the minor indiscretions, 1 in each rear door, a crease in the bonnet, plus the 2 dents in the wheels arch just after the rear door. The dents in the doors are gone, the crease in the bonnet is gone. The rear arch was an issue, as there is no access to behind the panel. He’s don’t his absolute best, and if I’m honest it’s as good as I could have expected. To be perfect we’d need a body shop, but for paintless it’s a damn good repair.

I’ve also been using chipex on the stone chips, which has worked a treat. Can’t believe how good the chipex system is, very impressed.

I’ve also tried my last attempt at getting the wheels clean. Got myself some brick acid, which is what many detailers have said will work. I had nothing to loose as the wheels are needing a refurb. I was amazed. The remaining soiling on the wheels literally fell off after a soaking with the brick acid. Although the driveway was bubbling and smouldering lol. Well impressed with the results. Should put the wheel refurb off for a small time.

I’ve also been using Geist leather cleaner as I knew this could be used on Alcantara/nubuck etc. So I’ve done the steering wheels, the gear knob, the handbrake handle, and all the seat panels. 100% better now, I was astounded at the cloth after cleaning so much soiling. I’ve a
so used a leather repair kit I’ve used many times before, Gliptone. With this you can completely clean the leather, and then dye the panels which have wear etc, then reseal them. Works an absolute treat. I need another coat ideally, but then the drivers seat will be perfect.

So I’m making decent progress really, looking better inside and out. Only gripe is today I’ve had the Air Con on whilst stationary at a ridiculously hot Oulton Park, and it was so so noisy. Opened the bonnet, and the tensioner was going mad, and seemed to be hitting its stop. It’s either a shot tensioner, or it’s a defective one way pulley on the alternator. So I’m going to buy all the timing belt kit, auxiliary belt kit, water pump etc, and make this a job to do soon.

Getting loads of compliments at Oulton Park today. My wife and her friend were shocked at how many people were passing compliments. I told them I bet it’s the only one here today. And to my shock, hiding round the corner under the trees in the shade, was the DTM I saw at Oulton Park 2 years ago to the day, and ignited my lust for a DTM. How Ironic.

Nice to see the car is being loved and pampered again, and yes your paintless dent repair man did wonders. I just love the aggressive rear bumpers on the DTM edition, the front bumper is cool almost as good as the rs4 but it's slightly less cool but that is my view...other than that i absolutely love the look of it (did audi ever make an A4 B7 DTM editon avant?)

I’ve managed to get a few more things done recently, which unfortunately was curtailed last weekend when I was admitted to hospital with a suspected heart attack!! Bit of a shock, still not over, apparently I have an undiagnosed heart condition I never knew about, great.

Weekend before, I took the front bumper off with a view to sorting 3 things. Fix the bumper sticking out on the drivers side, fix the yellowing headlamps and install new bulbs, install the newly refinished badge and plinth.
I know that some people won’t like the plinth, but for me I think it looks that’s bit nicer, and I’ve gone with gun metal badges front and rear which I think look really good.
Headlamps were an absolute *** to remove, so much so that 2 bolts snapped. I’ve been to the dealer and bought New bolts and 2 L shaped headlamp brackets. Once the headlamps were off though, I used my Autoglym sanding discs to rub them down and remove any film and also the stone chips. Working back through the grit paper I got them back shining and was impressed. If I’m honest, I think I may do them again as I’ve left some marks in that I’d prefer to remove. Had a lot of trouble with one of the DRL bulb holders, it had had a lot of heat through it annd the plastic just fell to pieces as did the bulb, might have to find a replacement holder. Also installed new Nightbreaker HID bulbs, plus LED DRL and sidelight bulbs. Bit frustrated the car now comes up with a bulb out warning and these bulbs were all can-bus compliant being Philips.…..
Found out there was a snapped plastic bracket on the drivers side bumper installation, so I Q-bonded it back together temporarily. I’ve bought a new one of these from the dealer too.
The badge and plinth went on really easily as there’s a sandwich plate that bolts behind. I’ll be honest, I’m happy with how the badge looks.
Also fitted a new breather valve assembly as I noticed the old one had oil pouring out of it.
‘Also’ fitted new hydraulic rams to the bootlid and bonnet, as these become tired, and the bootlid ones were being really ineffective.
Installed a new expansion tank as I found a stress mark and it’s just not worth overlooking it.

Found out the vac pump connection is toast too, so that’s why it sounds like piston slap every time I start it. So I’ve ordered a new vac pump, to go with the new aux belt kit and alternator overrunning pulley.

I believe they only did the DTM’s as saloons. I do agree the rear bumper makes the rear end look really aggressive. Ido like the front bumper too as it’s unique, I just wish they hadn’t used a bog standard SE grille.

Made a decision on my In Car Entertainment too. I went for an Xtrons B7 specific unit, which came with all the leads you need apart from the OBD adapter or rear view camera. I liked the way it fit very nicely into the stereo aperture without have a large bezel.
Im not gonna lie, pulling the RNSE out and seeing all the wiring behind it gave me anxiety, and didn’t help last weeks hospital situation, but, I got a friend to help me yesterday and we got it installed. Yes it’s got the usual Xtrons hissing in the background, there are many ways of fixing this, so I’ll try some of these in the coming weeks.
But to have my phone linked, be able to use my Apple Music account, and Google maps etc is great. Hands free worked straight away, and the steering wheel controls work as well. And the sound……..well, it sounds very very good. Really good range, the DSP gives you great flexibility on EQ etc, and there’s no distortion. So I’m quite happy at the minute. All ready for the trip down south next weekend.

It looks oke.. How's the startup time? Been looking around myself but still haven't picked one of these things, mainly because I know the xtrons is just a rebranded unnamed Chinese unit... Joying is another that sells the exact same thing with the same stuff...
In the end the difference is the optional stuff you get with the headunit.

And I still haven't decided which one will be best suitable and comes with the most options.

Be glad you can go onto aliexpress and replace it with one that is an RS4 copy made for the SE/DTM bumpers with the bottom having an extra bezel and the word quattro in it.

That will look absolutely sick on yours.

Im still getting used to this one, but so far im quite happy with it. Had to change the car battery today, and even then its lost none of its settings which I was impressed with. Sound quality is great, drives the rest of the BOSE system really well. I’m sure the menus and overall ease of use is not as good as say a Pioneer or a Sony etc, but considering these units are now reduced due to lack of sales for B7 specific units, its a bargain and does everything I need it to do. Steering wheels controls randomly started working all on their own, the built in hands free works straight away, sat nav is working fine, the radio isn’t as I broke the fakra aerial connector as soon as I removed it from the RNSE, but I’ll sort that eventually, or I’ll just use the radio app on my phone.

I looked on their website they are still asking way to much.... the same unit with the same andriod version and optional hardware by the way (just not branded xtron) are priced under Xtrons asking prices in the sale.... I'm still looking around, i might just get one and see how well it works. last one i've seen was running the latest andriod version and supports wireless connection on both andriod auto and apple carplay.

Still not sure as I also know these standard units can be a real pain when bought directly from the manufacturer and something goes wrong...so i'm looking for a UK supplier for one of these non Xtron units so i can get it with all the bells and whistles in one go for the price of the xtron without optional extra's

I had one of those Xtrons fitted to my Golf GTI and it kept draining the battery. It was alright if I used it every day, but left for 5 days or so in the summer, sometimes 2-3 days in winter and it would need a trickle charge. Took me ages to work out it was the Xtrons and a lot of posts on Google about it not being 100% canbus compatible and still drawing a current when off. Also the sound quality was poor so I removed it, sold it one and refitted the OEM one.

Well it’s definatly not draining my battery, I don’t use the car everyday as I’m lucky enough to have a company vehicle, and when I come to it after a couple days it starts just fine, so I wouldn’t say that my issue currently.

main issue I had this week, which would annoy the hell out of me this week when I’m away down south, is the bulb out warning pinging every time I switch the ignition on. So a bit of research, looks standard that B7’s don’t like LED bulbs, so I’ve sourced some resistor looms, attached them to the sidelight bulbs, and it looks like the bulb out warning has ceased. Had to spend an hour in the sun trying to extract my bulb from the depths of the headlamp when I dropped it, but hey ho, one of those things.
I’ve got a new brake vac pump, full service kit, and new bumper brackets which were broken I noticed, when taking the bumper off previously. Might have to slow down with the jobs list though, as I don’t want to end up back in hospital again.
