8.5Y RS3

Me too with my 2019 FL 8V. To the earlier point, I loved how under the radar it was except to those who "knew" it wasn't your standard family hatchback. I went for it in Daytona Grey for that very reason. It also just felt incredibly robust and well put together, far more so than my 8Y

Wish I still had my 2016 8v RS3 ... was such a joy to own / drive / listen to - probably why it was the only car I ever owned for 4 years and still enjoyed it to the last day.
GTS makes up for it a little bit though? no? :grinning: If I were allowed another RWD toy it would be a Cayman 4.0. One of the better modern OPF cars IMHO. M2 wouldn't have a look in for me (especially the new one).

For a long time I have wanted to put a better engine in a hydraulic steering car, along with the updated infotainment retrofit Porsche do themselves it becomes a viable car. Not cheap to do it properly but quite a few doing it.

But I'm glad I hung on to the DAZA and didn't jump the times I had the chance, I don't have to drive it far or fast before it puts a childish grin on my face and not many cars do that, certainly nothing new.

When I was thinking about buying the 8V I had the Golf and I didn't feel like I'd be getting any better car if I changed to the 8V. Most of those ones here didn't even have front parking sensors, so that's what I meant as spartan equipment. Nowadays I feel I should have bought that Golf with the best trim and engine available back then and I'd still be driving it. Or a factory order 8V equipped better than the stock cars but not sure what the cost would have been.

That is ever the problem with German cars. They come with nothing unless you pay. BMWs of the 80s were genuinely poverty spec if you had no options. More true now with VAG hierarchy than ever. You will get more kit on a VW as standard than an Audi, more than both of them with a Seat and most of all with a Skoda :icon thumright:

If Skoda had the 5-cyl, I would not be driving an Audi :grinning:

If you want a high spec car, you either need to buy a lower manufacturer that adds them for free, pay through the nose for options when new (which I have done in the past) , or find someone who did that and then sold the car used (which is how I got my 8V)

Generally it's true. Benz is the worst - the base car comes with four wheels, seat and a steering wheel. Add the basic comfort and functional stuff and see how the price doubles. Or how about BMW: no adaptive cruise control as standard, and if you want it you need to select a package with all the other assistance widgets too. Cost: 5000 €.

About VAG I think it's not the whole picture. At the moment Audi seems to offer pretty decent spec from the start, at least in Finland. I didn't need to tick many options when I ordered my current car to get everything I wanted. Some more looks and nicer interior can explode the price but you don't have to pay extra to cover the self-evident functions anymore. With 8V it wasn't so.

Then again the new Golf 8.5 seems to have almost everything possible as standard. But it feels so distressingly low quality that I don't want to be even anywhere near it. They say Audi's quality dropped drastically from 8V to 8Y. The difference is nothing compared to Golf 7.5 and 8, you don't even have to sit into the car to notice it, just take a peek from the door. Skoda and Seat aren't as bad.

But Skodas aren't even cheap anymore. I played with the configurators recently and found out my preferred spec for Octavia would cost more than the one of new A3.

I like your style. For me, the 718 GT4 or GTS 4.0 would be top of my list. I was incredibly close to going for a GT4 before opting for the RS3, but couldn't get approval from the better half...

Porsche is the worst for this! Need to throw £15,000 in options at it before it starts looking half decent.

Never fancied a Merc…ever, until I passed a chap with the new CLE53, similar to that of Nardo grey, looked lovely! However, for that money, I’d be in a M3. Never feel there’s many boxes to tick on the spec sheet for a Merc, other than colour, wheels and comfort pack.

Oh yes Porsche do tend to rinse you, however there are many with deep pockets for that badge and the others prefer the badge to options. Personally I am not overly interested in their consumer models, however in one of their driving cars like the 911 and Cayman I would be happy with poverty spec and sometimes less is more.

I remember hopping from my BMW into a same-age 911 in the 80s and thought I'd gone back 10 years :astonished:

I did look hard at the CLA45S before getting the 8V but something about that engine did not ring true, turns out I was right, it has been nothing but trouble for some. I still have a want for one of the older AMG 6.3 V8 cars but in a one-night-stand sort of way, it is not a marriage car and I already have enough overpowered RWD cars that try to kill me at least a couple of times a year as it is.

Porsche aren't so good at other stuff either unless you have sold your soul to them.

I placed a 'letter of interest' to buy Cayman GT4, the sales bloke told me I was number 4 (i think) on their list, 8 months later I get the call that Porsche have officially announced the GT4 and would I be so kind as to pop in and place my £10k deposit.

We went through all the colours and options and I was just about to hand over my credit card when I asked 'I'm number 4 on the list for a build slot aren't I?' he looked on his computer and said 'no, regular Porsche customers have registered after you and we give them preferential treatment, you won't get a car this year and maybe not next year or indeed at all, your around number 14 on the list now'

So, that was the end of that, I also heard through my Porsche contacts one buyer was phoned to say is car had landed and to pop down and take a look, when he got there the Head Sales guy met him and told him it was a 'mistake' however, it turned out that a Premier League footballer had walked in, seen the newly delivered car and bought it.

I know a few other Porsche stories as well................

One of the reasons I drive a used Audi :grinning: I don't play those games, not just with cars but anything that people have pi$$ing contests over especially after the pandemic lunacy. Thankfully I have never had any interest in the GT2/3/4 etc. Road cars are what I go for. GTS would actually be my pick and there is less BS with buying them.

Best Porker I have driven in recent time is a mate's really nice 996 C2 that he has spent much time and money getting dialled in , complete poverty spec but drives like a peach and just enough power to have fun.

GTS eh? heres another Porsche story.....................

I was looking for a Cayman GTS before my 'letter of interest' on the GT4

I found the correct car at Porsche in Sutton Coalfield, Carmine red, GTS interior pack, nice looking car and ex demo, I did the deal on the phone getting a small reduction in asking price, told salesman I was leaving Chester and would be there within 2 hours.

When I got there he was a little sheepish, he got me and my wife a Coffee and then proceeded to tell me that head of sales had put the car price up by £2.5K, so I said so we are back to the original asking price then? er no, he's put the car to £2.5k over list because he cant replace the car untill next year.

Porsche....................and people think Audi are bad, the GT4 was the final straw, I bought an R8 instead :)

To be fair couple of years ago when the supply and chip problems were biting hard and they couldn't get new cars for love nor money, even Ford were doing that sort of thing. Someone I know ordered a GTS 4.0 late last year, seemed to be no issues even though it was high spec and a bit of a delay but he has had it on the road since well before the summer, seems happy with it.

I am just glad I bought mine before all the madness started!

This was before that, probably mid 2015, maybe 2016 and me and Porsche were done :)

For sure the 4.0 GTS has many attractions and after moving from my 8v RS3 to a Dyson Merc A45s then an 8yRS3 the GTS certainly was the closest I could get to a car with a decent soundtrack but if I am honest my 8v even beat it on that front. For a daily 4 wheel drive practical hatch, the 8v was pretty much a perfect car.

Just had a phone call from Warrington Aldi…..

Apparently my 8Y is due a Mot and a gearbox oil change soon, and would I like to book it in

So good to not have to deal with these jokers anymore.

That is good of them to 'want to book it in' ... wonder if they would have told you the price beforehand too ?

Also though ... impressive that ALDI have gone into car servicing and mot's :tearsofjoy:

On another note…….

Am I missing something here, sounds no different then the earlier car.

As I am sure you'll agree that sounds quite impressive ... erm not sure about that and as you say sounds just the same.

They'll soon be piping that irritating fake V8 sound in over the speakers like they do on all the German 4-pot cars

And £74k with ceramic brakes... I think I paid £58k for my 8Y brand new in the same spec.
Same. If I was buying now and looking at having to fork out something in the mid/high £70k range for the FL, I'd give up the two rear seats and take the 718 GTS 4.0 or GT4 instead, without a second thought.

Looking for a bit of advice please, never had an Audi and giving serious consideration to the updated RS3 saloon.

Looking at the configurator I'm unsure whether to opt for the entry level model or carbon, I intend to add the Tech pro pack to either model which other than carbon additions and different wheels looks like it makes the cars very similar.

I am not particularly bothered about the carbon additions, based on this should this be something I'm opting for or better keeping my £3k+?

The Tech Pro pack upgrades the lights on the entry level model to the same set up as the carbon model and both seem to have the RS exhaust which I want.

Any advice on whether I should be opting for the carbon model over the entry one would be greatly appreciated.

I like my car but in no way, shape or form would I ever consider the FL. Surely you got rid of yours for a reason, so what makes you think the FL will be any better? As many have said on here, I’d say I preferred my 8V fl pre opf. If this 8Y sounded as good, I’d possibly look past its flaws but even with a valve controller…it’s so far off, f**king opfs

I feel like you’re griping with the car because of the OPF which isn’t Audi’s fault. The 8V was at a time where the OPFs weren’t a thing (well at least the early cars). I didn’t have an 8V RS3 so I have nothing to compare to other than my 8V S3. For sure there is difference in build materials, but it is what it is. I’ve had a look and there’s nothing else within my budget just now that I like and can buy new. I plan to drop the OPFs out of it completely, something I didn’t do with my original 8Y.

Not just that, the jerky gearbox whilst things warm up and radio/infotainment system crashing all the time isn’t great either lol.

What colour did you go for?

That is just the problem, I went to look at a fair few cars including 8Y, both in the early days and one or two of the later batch, the problem is each time I have had to get in my 8V and drive home.

I will go and look at the FL when it lands but it will suffer the same comparison on the way home. Time will tell if the result will be the same, but I think the 8V is safe for now.

I plan to drop the OPFs out of it completely, something I didn’t do with my original 8Y.

I think trying to make new cars behave like old ones is beating your head against a wall. Personally If I change it will be in acceptance of how it drives and sounds now. You can bet the FL will be locked down harder than ever and running without an OPF with no issues will be more difficult.

The consequences are not going to get less either, mot, insurance etc.e all know the Police have better things to do just now but VOSA don't and my guess is they will have more funds not less with this new government. Easy to think you may get away with it up north but one of 2 times I have been stopped by VOSA was on the Forfar bypass :disappointed:

Ahhh, I see the usual class clowns of AS.net are still alive and well lmao. :thumbs up:

Don't know if that was aimed at me but if it wasn't for some of the class clowns I might have jumped blind into something I would have regretted. Never a bad thing to hear the opposite opinion before parting with hard earned cash. :icon thumright:

Curiosity got me, Paid £51980 in Mar 23 for a poverty spec in Kemora with C&S, sold in Sept 23 (never got on with it) via Motorway for £51k, they valued it today with 8k more miles @ £45k. Still think thats ****** good to only have 7k depreciation in 18 months...
