8.5Y RS3

Good news!
The dealer has said that March collection is not a problem - which is a relief as it gives me longer to mentally prepare for selling my 8V.
Apparently first year VED rates are doubling from 1st April 2025 meaning the RS3 will have an additional £1650 added to its list price from this date, hoping my car is ready for collection in March.

I wouldn't call it a war on car owners, it's a tax that's based on the emissions level of the vehicle. It's good that it's been extended to EVs though as despite their lack of emissions at the point of driving, they do still contribute to wear and tear of the roads which should really be paid for by all road users, not just owners of ICE cars.

As someone who owns a car like an RS3, which pollutes more than others though, I think it's reasonable that I pay more tax as a result, as I'm contributing to both wear and tear of the road network and to emissions, rather than an EV owner who contributes to the first.

If someone wants a performance car that has higher emissions than other options, the solution is to accept paying more tax on it, or buy a car which pollutes less.

As sad as it is, as car enthasiasts, we have an expensive habit!

Update from the dealer today to say that as of yesterday my car is built and currently enroute to the port, the car was a week 46 build so has been completed a week early.

Nows the time to start watching ship departures from Emden :tearsofjoy:

Yeah we've all spent time watching ships in the past, think this time I will just go by dealer updates.

The car being built so soon has given me a dilemma though, my intention was to collect in March but if it makes quick progress to arrive at the dealership this month then it is tempting to collect it.

If it arrives in December then I'm 100% waiting until March.

We picked ours up first week of March on a nice sunny day, the thought of picking it up on a miserable cold wet day and meeting a gritter coming the other way just doesn’t appeal

That's a very good point that I'd not even considered especially when I've got around a 400 mile drive home, taking everything into account deep down I know it makes sense to collect in March.

So you don’t drive it in winter at all then ?

You could look at getting it pre-booked for PPF and get at least a track pack put on it. That would save a lot of winter heartache and mean you could still get the car early to enjoy it?

I will be getting mine as soon as it arrives, don’t see the point in waiting for the new reg in March, it doesn’t make that much difference these days with 2 new car registrations a year, more about the new car reg I suppose
Yeah that's sort of my attitude too sometimes, I've been reading up on used car values and it appears now until the turn of the year is not an ideal time to sell. Values supposedly drop then improve again early the following year once demand increases, I'm probably looking into all thus far too much considering the car isn't even in the UK yet.

Not much point having a car at all then
It was a joke.........it's just better/nicer to collect your new car on a nice day, it's odd but past 'collections' that have taken place on a nice sunny day seem to have played out better during my owner ship, some eg's

A3 2.0T quattro, picked it up on the warmest November day on record..................great car over 3 years
2008 TTS, another sunny pick up, great car that I enjoyed over 2 years
RS3 8Y, again nice sunny day and basically been a good car, minus some software stuff, love the sound (ex valve thingy fitted)

Audi A3 (brand new), pizzing down blowing a gale, sales girl had me checking for wheel rash under a brolly, steering off centre and the most annoying rattle on delivery day, big rock hit the bonnet on day 2 of ownership, followed by missfire, fuel pump fault, AA recovery (twice) 6 WEEKS in an A2 whilst they tried to fix it, rattle from rear shocks, windscreen wipers packing up (common at time)

VW Golf 2.0 GTD, raining on pick up ex demo, tyre pressure alarm after 1 mile, next day a rock got spat at passnger door on dual carraigeway (dent master) got run into whilst parked, a complete POS over rated car IMHO, on 19's it would never do over 40 mpg, p/x for Golf R after 9 months

Must admit that I have been looking around after 3 years of RS3 8Y ownership, I'm very tempted to order another new RS3, just can't find anything else that appeals to me, I keep looking at M3 Touring (but cant find one with the indicator pack, however, they all have the arrogant bas*ard pack, seems a std pack) but I dont like the looks, or the engine sound too much and it appears that 'M' car servicing is a trouser take down event.

I love the look of the RS4 but think the dash is very dated, RS6 I think too big for wifey to drive

Hamza review of it.

Seen a couple of these reviews now, although not seen one in the flesh. Even though they have made a couple of things look and sound more like the 8V still don't think there is enough to make me change.

Well, I'd take those seats in a heartbeat but the rest seems very marginal. Plus I'm not a fan of the exterior changes. Still no contrast accents for the interior in the UK?!

Wheels look awful. Far too busy and not even a patch on the previous base spec wheels which I really liked.
Seats look ok but that allegro wheel, yuk, just when you think they couldn’t make the bus wheel any worse, they go put another flat on the top of it.

It's weird the way the changes to styling work, very few like them at first and then over a period of time they look better and better.

1993 (I think) I was stood outside the gates on the museum steps at Porsche in Stuttgart waiting for one of our sponsers to turn up for a factory tour and watching the 'new' Porsche 993's go out on test drive and then back into the factory, my thoughts were 'don't like' another came out 'don't like' this went on for maybe 20 minutes and then through the gates came a Porsche 964 (previous model which I 'thought' I preferred)...... my thoughts 'sh*t that looks old'...weird how it happens

There’s also the old saying “be happy with what you already have” lol.
Very few keep a car longer than 2 years.

Audi are losing ground now, they haven’t developed the 2.5 any further, emissions are restricting it and the incoming movement away from petrol engines, look at Jag they’ve stopped completely until 2026 when they release the electric line up.
It’s coming whether we like it or not.

Never really worked like that for me, still don't like the early 8Y, like the FL better but not much. Never a fan of the PFL 8V or the 8P. Most times never bought the next car to the one I have as never liked it (exception being early M3) and still think the same of those cars today. Don't like the new M3 or many of the new BMWs, hasn't changed don't think it will.

Always thought the 964 looked old even at the time. Interior was prehistoric getting out of the E30 and E36 3-series I had at the time!

Yeah, I’m similar. Either I like it straight out of the box or not at all. Loved my M2 OG and the M3 Comp x-drive. Do not like any of the RS3 8.5y changes at all especially the rear diffuser and interior changes.

Keeping cars longer for the average person will become the norm I think. Cars are getting boring as hell and too damn expensive to swap out like we’re used to.

The last few comments are making me wonder how I'm going to find the new RS3 I've ordered having had an X3M comp, M3x and M240x over the past few years.

Never had an Audi and fancied a change from mainly BMWs, hope I'm not going to be disappointed

If you like the styling changes then you’re not going to be disappointed with the driving experience. That was my same concern after not having an Audi for 14 years and coming from the brilliant G80.

Truly, not many more capable cars on British a/b roads. Quicker than my G80. Great front end and overall balance. Damping is about perfect and brakes are superb with great feel.

Really surprised me.

That's great to hear, I'm definitely looking for that balance of power and easy to live with day to day. My G80 was rapid in all fairness but a struggle to live with at times especially on some uneven roads and when about towns and cities.

And your thoughts?
It’s a hell of a EV, does everything so well, it’s heavy though which does show in the corners a bit, Hyundai have done wizardry to make to drive like it does though, the chassis engineering to keep it all from getting too out of shape must be mind blowing.
Still looks as if it’ll date quickly though which is a problem when paying the thick end of 65k lol.

steering wheel is quite fussy, I’ve never seen so much going on in just that area lol.

You could spend a day just configuring the thing and still not explore all the modes / settings, the gear change mimic is astounding and really well done.

Stands out like a sore thumb, everyone looks at it, probably because you cannot miss the size of it on the road, sometimes it’s nicer to fly under the radar than scream I’m here.

Range isn’t great, you’d be lucky to see anywhere near 200 miles from a charge.

It’s a step in the right direction for me, but no way would I buy that with my own money, it would be a PCP and give it back after 3 years, but at £1000 a month it’s waaaay too much.

Sounds impressive and like you say definitely a step in the right direction although I'm with you and like a certain degree of anonymity.

Will be interesting to see if the depreciation is steep like many EVs, at £1000pm I wouldn't even think about one were I looking towards electric.

I wonder what the uptake on them has been like with those monthlies.

Agreed it’s huge lol. But nice to get in and out of.

The EV6GT which is a similar high powered EV I found wanting in headroom strangely.
