Hoping someone can help me track down a problem with my new RS5 where my steering wheel controls don’t work along with flappy paddles.
New to this forum and new to Audi. I have long background with BMW but the RS5 made me switch sides! The car is a 2014 plate with only 22k miles on it so you would expect the controls modules/wiring to be in good order. The car had a ghost immobilizer fitted and removed by a garage and apparently this links onto the CAN bus/LIN bus to immobilize the car. The guy I bought it from advised that the controls stopped working after it was removed. Apparently the ghost immobilizer uses the steering wheel controls as a code to disable itself but as I understand it’s just listening to the CAN/LIN bus so not directly connected to the steering wheel controls – don’t quote me on that!
The problem is that the multifunction steering wheel controls/flappy paddles don’t work, the horn and I assume airbags are working OK along with all the indicators/cruise control/lights/wipers. The lights on the steering wheel controls DO work OK. Now all of that would suggest the steering wheel control module is working OK, the only code is 01424 to say it cant see the multifunction controls so naturally I have tried replacing them with a set from a breakers – still nothing. Lights work but not the buttons.
In addition to that I have checked:
1. Coil spring wires for connectivity – all worked OK with no resistance
2. Wiring harness for the airbag/controls – all working good with no resistance
3. Coding for the steering wheel control module – set ok with the multifunction control module setting in place
4. Removing the above setting and applying again
5. Checked the area where the ghost immobilizer was removed for any disconnected wires – all OK
6. Checked the 3 wires on the 6 pin connector coming from the steering wheel controls (12v, earth and LIN bus) - i got 12v OK but only 1.2v on the LIN bus signal, see my screenshot. Everything i can see online shows that on an oscilloscope it should be +12v/0v. So not sure if this is low. I got this reading with everything connected.
What is also really strange is that the old steering wheel controls light up regardless when i plug them in, the breaker ones though dont light up unless i disconnect the LIN bus cable so its like they are sensing something they dont like or not being trigger by the signal from the car to light up...
Questions I would really appreciate some help with are:
1. Is the next logical set to replace to try and different steering wheel control module?
2. Does the steering wheel controls LIN bus cable have a direct connection through the steering wheel control module to somewhere else in the car? Maybe the cable was not connected correctly somewhere else?
3. As above I assume the steering wheel control module is processing the signals from the steering wheel controls so there is no other wires really to check beyond it in the car?
4. Guess the breaker supplied steering wheel controls could also be faulty!
5. Any other suggestions as to what to check next?
6. Is a low LIN bus signal of 1.2v correct?
