The MMI screen on my nieces car has been smashed (2020 Audi A1 1.5 Sport Edition)
Audi quoted her £1,700 to replace it - including coding it.
So, I bought a 2nd hand screen off ebay for £150 (same part number)
I got It fitted by a body shop & he sent it to a local VAG specialist To recode it.
They have come back & said they cant recode it - it’s been coded to the car it came out of.
Some of it works - (radio) but the settings dont work.
The £1700 price was for an MMI that hadn’t been coded to a car

So, question is - Can Audi reprogram It / over write it ?

Hi maybe its locked to the old car with component protection and requires a garage that has ODIS S, a diagnostic software used for servicing and repairing Volkswagen Group vehicles, which includes Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Skoda brand

Yes, you are correct.
Apparently - the screens get coded ONCE,
the code is linked to the ECU.
I phoned Audi today - they never entertained me - because it was 2nd hand screen etc ...... also they told me you can't recode the encryption
A nice way to sell you a new screen for £1700
So, at least ive got the radio & telephone working

They must be a independant garage that has access to odis that can recode it, i follow salvage rebuilds on Youtube i'm sure they have used someone to recode replacement parts brought on ebay when rebuilding cars

The VAG specialist got it working.
Basically - they removed the "glass" from the new one & fitted it to the electronics of the original one.
all good now
phew
