I've had the dreaded a/c compressor failure - quite dramatic as it happened on the M25 at 70mph. Bit of a nose-dive and suddenly engine off. Thankfully no traffic around me at the time.
Managed to coast and start up again on the key.
Pulled over at Cobham services and all I could hear was a bunch of metal rattling around under the bonnet. Sounded really bad. However, a convo with a friendly RAC chap and I was reassured it was the a/c clutch which had failed.
I drove it home to Kent - keeping at a steady 1400rpm which sounded like the happy spot for the broken compressor clutch. Thankfully, and I really am lucky with this, it didn't seize and cause the aux belt to snap (or something worse).
So now I need to get the old compressor off and replace the whole unit (I'm not going to faff about swapping the clutch, the a/c unit is twenty years old now and just needs replacing).
It looks to me that the oil cooler and filter will need to come off before I can get the a/c compressor out.
Can someone confirm this? Or is it a better idea to remove the bumper and remove the compressor 'through the front'?
Appreciate your input - hoping to get this finished over the weekend.
