Timing chain replacement on audi a4 2007 2.0 tfsi quattro avant - parts advice required

Hi All

Hope I'm posting in the right place, sorry if i have not.

Hoping for some help. Car been for a service and technician an experienced guy, says the timing chain needs to be replaced as it is louder than it should be. not been changed since i owned it, a few years now.
Timing belt has been done with original audi parts 2 years ago but no chain was done at the time.
These guys don't deal with main dealer, just euro car parts and gsf, so i will need to get the parts from audi myself and keep it original.

Could someone advise me on what to get and anything else in that area of the car would be worth doing while timing chain is being done?
Part no.s would be helpful too as I don't have a clue what i need to get.

BUL engine code is my car quattro 2 litre tfsi avant.

Slightly confused by what you mean in timing belt was done but not timing chain. You wouldn't have both, so was it the auxiliary belts that were changed?

It doesn't sound like the garage you are talking to are an Audi specialist, I would recommend seeking out a specialist (not a main dealer) who have the experience in doing this, know what to look for and what to replace. If they haven't got them then they will need a camshaft locking tool, tensioner pins and the cam variator tool.
 
Sorry, my mistake, definitely Timing chain and something about tensioner too, he said rear of engine block i recall him saying if that makes sense. i am not to hot on mechanical side of things.
The cambelt was done 2 years ago i should have said.

Also just in case i am mistaken or the tech is, anyone know an audi specialist in or within decent travelling distance to east london? Thx

Ah, looked at the BUL engine and it would appear it does have both a cambelt and then a chain which links the inlet and exhaust cams together on the back of the engine. It appears the hydraulic tensioner oil ways can get restricted causing wear which then requires the chain and sprockets to be replaced.

I would definitely be getting that specialist opinion. Hopefully someone will know of one in your area.

Maybe post up a recording of the engine as I have seen other posts on here where those with experience of that engine have been able to help guide. Record it starting from cold, idling and a few low rev blips which should help people give advise.
 
The rear cam chain tensioner is a well-documented area of concern for all the B7 2.0tfsi what ever engine code you have.

Poor engine servicing and long life schedules are the main culprit.

As the tensioner is hydraulic it relies on good and reliable oil pressure as soon as it possible once started, the problems start with reduced flow from the oil pump and trhough the oil galleries leading to increased wear to the tensioner and chain etc.

chain rattle on start up slowly becomes more apparent as the wear increases on the sprockets and chain to the point the tensioner cant control the slack properly, if it goes tits up you will have a much bigger issue than getting it replaced asap.

Parts are not to bad cost wise but it is not a fix you should attempt unless you are of a diy nature.

Great info.

Do the galleries get partially blocked or is it a lack of flow from the pump? Sounds like whichever is the cause needs sorting as well as the replacement of the chain and sprockets.
 
The galleries can get a bit clogged but then so does the oil pump suction pipe mesh which just doesn't help either.

The long life service schedules don't do these engines any favours to be honest as the oil just turns into treacle and takes that much more effort to get to all the critical parts on start up.

If you look at the whole lubrication system its the clogging of the pickup pipe mesh , then oil pump failure and the ensuing issues that cause the most probs.

The chain tensioner is a wear and tear part as is the chain etc but with reduced oil flow they just wear out so much quicker .

Rule of thumb with these engine is regular oil and filter changes and the best oil you can get , do it annually or 6k to 8k or so miles, i do it every 4-5k .

Opie oils do good tensioner kits as do better motor factors, I'd steer clear of ECP to start with, autodoc are a good source and offer a good range of kits and prices.

Audi parts will just steal your money and you can get the same quality parts elsewhere.

there are "kits" and "kits" some have just the chain/tensioner and sprocket others offer the variator too but costs a lot more, depending on how worn all the parts are will determine what you need.
 
Its well worth replacing the HPFP cam follower aswell whilst doing the job, another weak link , BUL engines have a revised cam lobe etc but the follower still wears through .
 
Whilst the cam chain cover is off, worth checking the rear coolant flange below it and fitting for leaks as thats another point of failure.

What I will say is that the cam chain on the rear of the engine is not the only source of rattles in that area, but cam chain rattle only tends to last for a short interval or seconds from cold unless it's very worn in which case it can rattle every start up.
The brake vacuum pump is bolted onto the cam chain cover and is also a known source of rattling but it is more of a continuous rattle whilst the engine is running, worth checking its not that, depending on the cars service history and milage it is very possible that both are to blame.

Is regularly serviced each year as I do about 2-4k miles a year in it as i have a 2nd car which does most of my miles, audi on 106k mileage and i've owned it about 4 years now. Definitely BUL engine code and 217bhp quattro avant and is standard.
does has a full service history, not all audi though but been regularly maintained before me.

i know very basics really and would never undertake any job apart from, checking the oil, topping it up as it drinks a fair bit and definitely no leaks on the drive.

I'll look for an Audi specialist to get a second opinion. I'm happy to travel a little from East London if any of you can recommend anyone. Happy to travel into Hertfordshire, Essex, Bedfordshire as i intend on keeping this car for a long time.
