Car insurance up !!

The insurance on my S5 is due for renewal this month. Saga were kind enough to let me know the premium would be increasing from £326 to £1711:wtf:

Now I was expecting an increase given I took out a 3 year fixed price policy when I originally got the car which at time I thought was cheap but as I now have an extra 3 years no claim bonus and the value of the car has obviously decreased, I thought 500%+ was a little excessive!

For a laugh I phoned Saga to express my shock, disappointment etc etc and literally the agent was speechless when they looked at the renewal and could not explain why the premium had increased so much given nothing had changed. However they did say they wanted to keep my business and therefore if I renewed they could offer me a £40 discount as I was a loyal customer .

Aviva turned out to be the cheapest at £650 which was more in line with what was expecting to pay.
My insurance company did similar when the RS3 went from £500 to £1,200 after a year with no points or anything. Seemed very happy to offer a discount of £50 and asked if I wanted to continue with the renewal. Are these people deluded or something?! No thanks, I'll go to Aviva for £600 instead...

I get the feeling that lots of insurers are actively pricing themselves out of the market because they don't want to take on the perceived risk of some cars. I thought it was an RS3 thing but I had a lot of trouble getting my Emira insured too. Even now there's only a couple of companies showing up on Meerkats at "sensible" money. It wasn't long ago I was paying £250 for my M3. The market has gone mad.

I’ve just taken cover with Aviva too, £659 which is a couple of hundred less than Audi insurance wanted and about (slightly cheaper) than last years.

I'm not surprised at the higher premiums, after all the RS is a performance car.

I think you're missing the point of this thread to be honest. It's not that people don't expect to pay more for an RS than an A3, it's the fact that premiums appear to have skyrocketed through no fault of the drivers. Like mine was, up from £500 to £1,200 on renewal with the only changes being the car is worth less being a year older and having accrued an extra year NCB, both of which should've brought the cost down rather than over doubling it.

True and that is the point we are all making. It makes no sense that one person with a similar set of paramters such as age, location, NBC etc can have a wildly different quote from someone else. Actual car models aside ( which used to be the main difference ) the main factors used to just that, age, postcode, amount of years of NCB, claim history and so on. Now it makes no difference and it seems some insurance companies are actively marking it up to price out customers which is an insane business model. and dont get me started on using renewal time to sneak in some made up admin fee.

Point taken. It seems that insurance premiums in the UK have increased much more than the rest of Europe.

I don't have any comparison to Europe to go on, it just feels wrong that as a driver you do everything you can to keep the insurance costs down and then they just hike them up when the risk that you pose (which is allegedly what prices are based on) goes down through additional NCB and vehicle cost.

My insurance actually went down this year by by 25% almost! With Esure Flex. Quote me Happy were even cheaper but huge excess and not great reviews.

I wasn’t so lucky. Mine went up on the Polestar from £335 to £446, again, for no good reason… ‍♂️

I'm over 50 with an 80% discount and I pay the equivalant of £609 here in Finland. Not sure how that compares with other European countries but running a car here is expensive. Many households share one car - the public transport system here is very good.

I can't imagine how much insurance would be for any of the RS Audis here.

I've just been looking at the search engines for my renewal. 54, 3 points, Surrey village postcode and it's still over £800. with a £750 excess. Can't believe the premiums now, it's such a racket.

Thanks Mate. In the end I managed to hammer it down to £620 with Aviva by flipping main driver to my wife. Please do share details of your broker too though as my Emira will be up for renewal early next year and I struggled to find insurers last time.

I know every person's insurance is different but I am of a similar age, half decent post code and on the RS4 with all mods decalred, fully comp it is around £430 per year.. so you should be able to get a fairly competative rate. Will pm you

That's a fantastic rate. Thanks for the lead.

Saga just jumped from £550 last year to £860 for my renewal.

I was struggling to get a competitive renewal but then tried Audi, cheaper than last year.

I was with Audi last year and the renewal this was nearly double. I managed to get mine via ‘quote me happy’ which is Aviva for around the same as last years. I’ll try Audi again next year to see how they compare again

@swisstony could I have the broker details please? Thx.
I'm looking at first insurance for an RS3 and quotes are alll over the place.

I knew it was coming and would be quite an increase as I locked into a 3 year deal with Saga, but £240 last year to £974 this year

I'm more flabbergasted at the £240 you managed to score from them last year. I think you were due quite a correction and you got one! Hopefully Meerkats will get that down a bit. I think I paid around £650 in October.

That was a 3year deal so was secured Jan 22, I kept the deal when I bought the RS3 in March 22

Mine had gone up again on the renewal quote, managed to get it for half of the renewal price via Aviva.

I'm in the same boat with a high renewal price. Topcashback comparison is coming back cheapest via Aviva with £45 cashback too. Going direct to Aviva was £600 more than the topcashback price

Always worth looking at cashback sites (topcashback, quidco etc.) to see if you can get a bit of money off

as mentioned before, happy to pass on the details of my broker for you guys. It is sometimes worth it for a quick call, nothing lost .

Never heard of locking in 3 year deals !
Thats with Saga, I paid around £240, may have been £260 and the same price for 3 years, renewal came through at £974, eventually Saga dropped to £7xx but went with Quote me happy at £480

I went with them last year. It’s basically Aviva by another name. It will be interesting to see what happens this year. A friend has a Range Rover sport and can’t insure it at the moment. He found two chaps sat in it on his drive before Christmas with keys in a faraday case. He has a Ghost fitted and drive bollard but still can’t insure it!

I'm chuffed I have just renewed with Audi Insurance and the cost went DOWN only by £1.63, and that's without haggling, how about that.

Interestingly I have a Pandora fitted with live tracking and the ability for me to stop the car even if they take the keys and the tag and my phone, it's not recognised at all by any of the insurance companies I contacted for quotes

Insurance is a joke, needs more regulation.

When I had to swap insurance when changing from G80 M3 to RS3 SB last July because AVIVA and many others wanted double the current premium. Had to change to AUDI but still had to pay way more at £900.

Reading this thread, thought I would have a quick check and AVIVA will insure me for under £700 and few others are closer to £600.

Crazy!!

I would agree with that 100%, Insurance companies basically legalised scammers, all the stuff they come out with to hype the price is unreal

Does anyone have evidence and details of whether fitting a Tracker does definitely reduce the insurance premiums?

Hi.
Depends on each individual insurer and scheme.
If the tracking device is a policy requirement then you might not receive any premium discount.
A number of our insurance schemes offer premium discounts for for the fitment of an approved tracking device.

Dan.

Well I got a pleasant surprise with my renewal quote *dropping* by pretty much 40 per cent. Maybe it's an error, but I'm sure as heck not going to flag it!

Wow I just add additional driver to my policy my sister and my annual premium went down from £863 to £797 for my 2022 Audi RS3 vorsprung saloon , then I add my 2025 new Audi RS3 carbon vorsprung and it's now annual premium shows £305 omg , we see what the renewal is like because I've only got a month and 10 days left until new policies required.
