I’ve got a 80k miles Audi a3 cabriolet 1.8 tfsi 2011 reg. After about every 3000 miles the low oil light comes on and the reservoir is empty.

Has anyone else/ is this a common problem with this engine….? Seems abit excessive oil use for 80k miles.
Does anyone have an tips or tricks on how I can reduce the amount of oil the engine gets through?

thanks in advance

If no signs of puddles & no smoky exhaust, maybe piston rings, I'd get a cam I to the cylinders, maybe pull the sparks out to check for any oil on the ends.

That’s what I thought (piston rings) but really the cost of getting new ones it’s not worth it

Investigate it before your engine becomes toast.

The earlier TFSI engines do suffer with high oil consumption, they had poor quality piston rings, which allow quite a bit of oil to be burned in the combustion chamber, I think up to 0.5L / 1000km was a "standard". If you want to use this car for many years, you might have to spend a bit of money and get an engine overhaul/rebuild, I think there are better quality piston rings that somewhat solve the problem, although we don't really do rebuilds regularly so I don't know for sure. If you're planning on selling it, just keep topping off the oil until you get rid of the car. Using thicker, higher viscosity oil can also reduce the usage a bit, but it's not something I'd recommend as a fix.

Of course, it's not 100% guaranteed that this is the cause of your excessive oil usage, might be bad turbo that's leaking oil or other things. Best thing to do would be to bring it to a workshop so they can check it out before you spend the big bucks on engine overhaul.
