Hi all, I’ve got an Audi A3 2014 1.6 TDI Manual, in the past day I’ve been driving and the cars suddenly switched gear when driving and over revved then switched back. An example of this is on approach to the motorway I’ve been in 4th gear reaching around 3k revs it’s then switched itself to 3rd from what I’ve seen on the screen and over revved then switched back whilst the gear stick hasn’t moved from 4th. It’s also done this when in 6th gear going to 4th then 5th and bakc to 6th on screen, does anyone know what this could be as I’m baffled. I’ve had a new clutch under 10k miles ago in the last 4 months and a new gearbox around 3 months ago with no other hiccups.

It’s also gone from 2nd to first then back again whilst still staying in 2nd on the gearbox it hasn’t been hopping out and there’s no strange sounds except the over revving and going back to normal again within a few seconds

I would think that must be the clutch slipping. I think the dashboard gear display is just comparing engine rpm and car speed and, as long as the clutch pedal isn't pressed down, working out what gear the car must be in for that ratio of the two speeds. If the clutch starts slipping, then the revs will go up and its maths will tell it you must be in a lower gear than it thought. If it's that, then it would go back to the correct "gear" if you lift off the accelerator, as the torque will go down and the clutch will stop slipping.
Given you said you've recently had a new clutch, I'd say you need to go back to whoever fitted your clutch. I'm assuming you're not driving along with your left foot resting on the clutch pedal, and that your foot is away on the footrest any time you're not stationary, changing gear or pulling away. Unless you regularly hold the car on the clutch when stationary in traffic on hills then a clutch should last way longer than 10k miles, so either the one they fitted is no good, or just possibly there's something wrong with the master cylinder or release mechanism.

(also what's the history of needing a new clutch, and then a new gearbox a month later, in case that gives any clues).
