Had/have 4 year cover on both S3 and RS3.

Buying an A1 and apparently only 3 years available? Is this correct?

If that is through the dealer then look at the open market as it is usually cheaper and should give you the option you are looking for.

GF bought a car 2 months ago and got 4 years vehicle replacement plus with ALA for about £280 ish

As above - don’t go for Dealer GAP insurance add on as overpriced and less cover than elsewhere.
