Hey all,

My cambelt let go last night, just after I'd had it serviced and had it booked in for a cambelt/water pump replacement etc.
And now it's looking like a head rebuild etc. Does anyone know of any heads/engines or the right people to talk to get one.

Cheers

Max

Literally right after the service?

Had it serviced Friday. Was driving it last night, oil pressure warning came on by the time I got off the m11, it started ticking a bit and then died by the time I’d got round the roundabout. Really close to home. M I really don’t think they did anything wrong, recommended I booked in for a cam belt change as it hadn’t been done for 80,000 miles and since 2016 I think.

If cambelt fails it would have instant failure, with nothing to do with oil light , if it still drove a few miles after oil light then posdibly cam chain / tensioner/ oil pump failure.

I think it looks like the whole lot has gone. I think the cambelt has gone because of the oil pump or I'm just incredibly unlucky and the fat that they needed doing was accelerated by having a service.

Unlikely that the cam belt failed due to oil pump , a quick look under the bonnet would confirm cambelt failure.
Cam belt failure would have had instance results if you were driving .
it would not have carried on going for any distance .

Cam belt on the front controls one camshaft , the second cam shaft is controlled by cam chain on the rear of the head.

They are taking the head off early next week and will have a look then to see how bad. But, it's me, so it will be worse case scenario. :crying:

I feel your pain. I had this last year. Low oil pressure & then died. Cam chain tensioner had given up. Had a considerable rebuild on the engine - cost me about £6.5k. Its back on tje road & roaring again. Good luck

Just looked it up. It was £4.5k to get back on road- with a garage doing everything, including new clutch & loads of bits (including recon turbo)

Hey lads, sorry I've been offline, still feeling sick about it all! Garage managed to strip it this week. Believe it or not, the timing belt and chain had not snapped .... It was oooohhhhh soooo much worse!
The oil pump failed - has definitely caused head damage, and probably block damage. Cam shafts were scraping against the housing and a bolt has sheared off somewhere. Not sure of the exact name ... but it's ******.

Now just deciding what to do about it. Car cost £3k including swapping my old Peugeot 406 coupe. Just don't know whether to throw more money at it or scrap it.

Looking for a crate engine but none to be found, so a complete rebuild is the only option - which alongside having new clutch and turbo (might as well replace) it's going to be a big job. Do you guys have any advice on getting re-con engines? Have looked at Volksmine (have some really bad reviews) and currently looking into NZ Engines in Essex. Stumped on what to do really. Any help/advice appreciated.

Oil pump failure, no surprise, and not what you needed.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but realistically it's a scrap yard job, unless it's a very nice low-mileage example and you want to spend the £3k -£4k on It is time to say goodbye to it.
Such a shame .

It is in lovely condition, immaculate interior with 140k on the clock.
I have found a 120k second hand engine that has just been dropped off, however my engine mounts are knackered, so need to find a second hand pair of them - got any hanging around?

I replaced my mounts last year, they weren't to bad from ECP and seem to be ok thus far.
Did you get any sort of warranty with that lump?

Hey man, no warranty. It was a FB marketplace jobby for £700. TBH, I think I'm just going to get it running and trade in at a dealer. Im replacing the belts and the clutch and will obvs have all the new plugs and fluids etc. Are the engine mounts the same for the BUL as they are for normal 2.0 tfsi?

thats a lot for an unknown condition engine chap, surely you didnt buy it blind without any info etc.

It was £550, from a guy who breaks VAG - engine was running. I had to pay my mate £150 to go to Brimingham and pick it up with his trailer from London. It's all a bit of a risk, but it's £2k cheaper then buying a recon engine. Done less miles then the one I blew up! Belts have been replaced, new plugs, new fluids, new filters. Should run like a dream! Managed to get a brand new mount for £60 so..... fingers crossed.

Just check it is stamped BUL on the head and block as some traders are miselling other engine codes hoping the buyer doesn’t click to the difference.
