New (to me) A4 1.8T Cab - first thoughts.....

Ooops - it's a B6 - can the mods please move this to the right section please ?!


Had a couple of journeys now and noticed some things - it's 18 years old so I know not everything will work and some just might be normal traits !!

It's a 2005 1.8T Sport Quattro Cab.

Not sure what the Sport signifies but it seems quite well equipped - enough for my needs. Has fully electric leather heated adjustable seats with lumber support, dual climate control. Coming from a TT roadster it has the extra space I need but can obviously notice the difference in weight.

The gear change is a little notchy but I'm going to get all the oils changed so we'll see if that makes any difference.

The three central air vents don't seem to do much at all, wherever you divert the airflow to. I noticed in a scan I did it mentions intermittent faults with ' Defrost Flap Motor' - 'Central Flap Motor' - 'Left Temp Flap Position Motor' - does this mean there's a different motor to change where all the ventilation airflow goes ?! I guess if one or two are gone are they a nightmare to get to ?! They were historic codes that haven't reappeared yet but something doesn't seem right.

The clutch bite position seems high ? Or higher than my TT that has just gone. I assume it a hydraulic clutch so it adjusts itself ? So the position doesn't/can't change ?

Radio did work on my long trip down but now doesn't - already been told that the Aeriel is in the boot and the wiring can get damaged over time so got to work out how to tackle that.

It's better on fuel that my TT but then I only had a 5 speed box so it did over 3000rpm at 70, this does about 2,300rpm in 6th at 70 so pleased with that. Doubt it's better around town pulling the extra weight but my journeys are normally mid to longer journeys rather than around town.

For many the B7 was really only a facelift b6 and a lot of parts are shared, front bumper/grill etc are the obvious different ones visually.

Yes Hydraulic clutch.

And its only covered just over 6k miles in the last 4 years, not much at all.

Finding more strange behaviour (car drives fine and I'm enjoying it !), Interior lights have an odd way of working (well one doesn't so probably a blown bulb), the passenger one does its own thing , footwell lights don't work (but found a missing fuse ).
Lights in the sun visors never come on.

Does anybody know how to remove the central interior light panel ? There's no screws but didn't want to pry the panel off in case of breaking it.

Boot lock is just solid - no movement, may have to remove it to inspect.

Can't see anything wrong with the aerial wiring - how can you test it at the boot ? Stick a volt meter on it when the radio is on ?

All minor things but they mount up to a few niggles when added together !!

Well I worked out why the lights never worked behind the sun visors - I never slid the mirror covers to the side !!

C'mon guys you could have told me that saving me hours of trying to work out why they weren't working

As regards the ventilation system and how to redirect the airflow - it does indeed have separate motors to direct it to other places.

Found this useful video which explains quite easily how to get to them.



Haven't done it yet but will do it before I repair my glove box hinges !!

Oh and I don't think my car was ever spec'd with footwell lights ....
