VCDS not opening parking brake

Hi all, I'm trying to change my discs/pads and need to disable to automatic parking brake with VCDS for the rear wheels, but it doesn't seem to be working. Really grateful for any help people can offer.

This is what I'm doing:
1. VAG plugged in.
2. Ignition on (VAG does it's initial scan, recognises the car, etc).
3. Select '03- ABS Brakes'.
4. Select 'Basic Settings -04'
5. Select 'Start lining change mode' from drop down menu.
6. Select 'Go'.

At that point I get the brake warning lights on the dash, the VCDS read out says 'Unknown' for a second or two and then changes to 'not running', and remains like that until I select 'Stop' - what I don't see from the display is 'Running' or 'Finished Correctly' at any point, which is shown on the Ross-Tech tutorial videos. I know the brakes don't actually open at this point, but I can't hear the mechanical noise of the mechanism, and the parking brake switch light remains on. Has it actually worked? Is there a way of confirming it before I start stripping down the brakes?

Can anybody offer any advice as to what I'm doing wrong here?

Hi Darren, what do you mean by that? That’s something I’ve not heard of before.

When you open the controller there will be a button on the right hand side of the screen that says Security Access. Press this and it may give you a code to input via a prompt window.

I have never done this but copied this from a post I saw once Incase I ever needed it. Posted below in case different to what you are trying.

Thanks for that, but the ‘53 parking brake‘ is actually for earlier cars than mine. Found that out from watching a fair few youtube videos!

Ok, thanks. Unfortunately I don’t get this option when I open VCDS.

I know this is a daft question but have you released the parking brake before trying to wind it back with VCDS? it wont work if the brake is on.

Actually, that's not a daft question... or if it is, I'm being a numpty! Having found a couple of other videos tutorials, one says to cycle the handbrake off, on and then off again before doing the VCDS bit, which I hadn't done!! I will try that today! Thank you!
