Trust me, I dismantled Virtual Cockpit / lower dash panel out over 10 times. Every time, I foam taped EVERYTHING I could see or felt moving, it was still there. That rattling / metallic sliding noise was really driving me crazy. Especially lower speed over the bumpy road. I was 100% convinced that it was some components directly behind the dash VC.

Turns out to be lose stuff knocking against my driver seat lower compartment flap was the main cause!!!!!!!!!!!! <felt so much like directly from front>. Despite numerous dismantling, it just did not come across my mind at all. Can so easily missed. Have researched and seen tons of threads of people talking about it. Hardly anyone is able to pinpoint where exactly rattle noises come from. In order from what i think is prority.

Lower dash left air duct lose
Central console air duct lose
Dash upper left side electronics lose
Dash mid low electronics lose
Dash mid rear electronics lose
Dash lose connectors rattle
Cup holder clips lose
Steering column lower plastic cap lose LR
Lower airbag panel hook
Virtual Cockpit rear speaker
Bonnet open foot panel lose

When a car gets old, numerous places can start to rattle. So here is a summary of where all potential areas can try to eliminate. Good luck folks.

It's not that old mate, that's mostly bad building at factory.

Honestly these 8V are absolutely terrible for rattles and squeeks, I have never had a car like it.

Even worse, i've never had a car where a rattle in one area can sound so much like coming from another area. I've used a stethoscope to try and track some of them down, it is a nightmare.

Pano roof, dash, glovebox, seatbelt latches, boot, door seals ... SO ANNOYING

Not got any rattles or squeaks in my 8v S3 and I've owned it over 4 years from new

Really why do you doubt it ? please elaborate more ?
Aside from both Audi's Technical Product Information bulletins being full of hacks/fixes/mods and replacements for various interior and pano sunroof bits ... forums are also full of complaints and DIY fixes for rattles/creaks/squeeks.

Depending on your model year, they may have fixed some of them. For the 2018 8V2 at least, sunroof is a PAIN

I have a MY18 8V2 and the sunroof is almost silent (apart from a few months after Audi messed with it for no particular reason)

Although there will be exceptions, ( @8YARWY :friendly wink: ) I would be interested who has Saloon and who has SB? Roof on the saloon is smaller and has much more torsional strength. Same as the body because of the fixed rear bulkhead and parcel shelf. I think there is a lot less flex in the saloon.

I have driven an SB, and been a passenger in another and they have always seemed noisier than my saloon

I think you got lucky. My '18 saloon pano is a rattle can. The issue isn't in flex due to roof/body rigidity, it is poor design (which they later revised) and dirt ingress issues on seals. Most of the sound happens through inertial energy. There are _some_ that are due to rigidity, such as the outer seal creaking.

When you combine that with roof liner clip rattle and other things, it gets pretty horrid on UK potholed roads. It isn't too bad on smooth roads, but it sounds very un-German on city roads for me.

I have a thread somewhere about various fixes and the pain of trying to track down all my rattles.

Zero noises from my old 67 plate RS3 pano roof.
