Why was the A4 1.4 discontinued?

Hello,

I have the 1.4 A4 and I've just read that they stopped producing the 1.4 150, and the 2.0 150 is what they expect most people to buy.
Now I'm just curious, they both have similar hp and 0-60 times, the 1.4 has better mpg and lower tax, then why did they discontinue this engine on the A4? Is it unreliable?

Wow, that was a long time ago they discontinued it, at least three years now.
 
I think it was an emissions thing. Something to do with WLTP testing I believe.
 
Also, may or may not be related, but there's a lot of reports of problems with this engine hesitating / stuttering around 2,000rpm, and being impossible to drive smoothly as a result. This was across the VAG range, I think the problem was acknowledged by the manufacturers but no known fix as yet

Have not experienced this with mine, I've done 90,000 miles now. I think that the 1.5 evo had this issue
