Recent updates in the Formula 1 world have stipulated that from 2026, there will be new regulations outlining a heightened focus on electrical power and 100% sustainable fuel. As a result of this significant shift, Audi has made the decision to enter the F1 in 2026. The latest piece of their puzzle has been revealed, with the manufacturer announcing they will be a power unit supplier to Swiss team Sauber. Here’s a look at why the background of this news, and why it makes sense for all involved.

Audi and Sauber Reach Agreement

Recent news from the Audi camp has brought details of an agreement made with Sauber, ahead of their 2026 entry into the Formula 1 competition. Audi has announced that Sauber will become a strategic partner in which Audi will acquire a stake and that the Swiss Formula 1 operation will become their works team in 2026.

Specifically, Audi will manufacture the power unit at their Germany manufacturing center based in Neuburg. From here, Audi will send the power units over to Hinwil in Switzerland, where Sauber will complete the race car at their facility. Speaking to the media about the partnership, Audi AG Board Member Oliver Hoffmann has said, “We are delighted to have gained such an experienced and competent partner for our ambitious Formula 1 project.”

Speaking further about the future agreement, Hoffmann elaborated, saying, “We already know the Sauber Group with its state-of-the-art facility and experienced team from previous collaborations and are convinced that together we will form a strong team.”

What’s in the Audi Deal for Sauber

The mark of a good business deal is mutual benefit. This is certainly present, as there’s a lot for Sauber to gain from this arrangement.

They’ve struggled for cash in the past, teetering on the brink of closure. The injection of cash from Audi will enable them to be on a level footing with the other F1 teams for the first time since their partnership with BMW. As well as this, a partnership with a prestigious brand such as Audi will do wonders for Sauber’s reputation, even years down the line. This, plus having a power unit supplier focused solely on them, means this is an excellent deal for Sauber as well.
