Hey guys,

So I bought my 2010 A3 2.0tdi (CBB170) 8 weeks ago from a garage forecourt in Northwich. I noticed after a few weeks the turbo starting to make the dreaded siren sound. As I’ve read on here that only means bad things I took it back to the garage as the car has a 3 month warranty on it and it’s still well within that. They fobbed me off saying that’s just what a car that age sounds like, which I kinda knew was ********. The last couple of weeks the sound has gotten louder so I took it to Camco in Warrington who are turbo specialists and they’ve just confirmed that yes the turbo is knackered (thrust bearings?) and it’s £1300 for a replacement fitted. I’ve explained that it’s still under warranty and they’ve very kindly agreed to deal with the warranty company. So I’ve rung the warranty company, A1 Approved, and they’ve informed me that the warranty policy on the car from the garage is only worth £500, the garage’s decision on the amount. Not only that but I’m liable for a £25 excess so it’s actually only £475, non of this I was told when purchasing the car. So I’m just wondering if anyone has had to deal with anything like this before? Any advice? I’m trying to get ahold of the garage to discuss the amount as I think they should be liable for replacing the turbo.

*update*
The warranty company have just informed me that the turbo isn’t covered because the type of policy the garage took out on the car is component specific.
Still trying to get hold of the garage who sold me the car.

I always say read the warranty info fully & get it in writing what is covered as aftermarket warranties are shxt mostly.

Whistling turbo doesn't mean it's knackered, & blown turbo is when it has actually disintegrated in pieces, so it's just a little tired, so effectively it is a working car.

Unfortunately this one's on you for not checking the warranty & tbh is the whistling is very apparent, it probably would have been there on testing.

That's not to say the garage arent shxt, but it's hard to prove anything without evidence, unfortunately it's a crappy experience with a non moralistic garage.

Hi mate,
Yup agreed, lesson learnt… I’ll definitely be more vigilant next time. That being said, the garage knew exactly what they were doing with the way they worded the warranty and also lying to me about the turbo when I brought it back to them complaining of the noise saying “that’s just how they sound” is massively off.
Agreed the turbo isn’t “blown” but it’s definitely had its days numbered and will die at some point now the noise has started. It also wasn’t there when I test drove the car, it’s gotten progressively louder over the last month or so. It’s been tricky with the warranty company for that very reason. Technically as you say the car is still working, however my argument is it isn’t working as it would from factory, there is a fault and that means it’s not running as it should.
I’ve managed to negotiate the Garage I bought it from paying £1k and I’m covering the other £300+, which in this scenario all things considered is the best I’m going to get. As a side note, John at Camco in Warrington who’s doing the turbo replacement has been ace at being patient whilst I deal with the garage and warranty company and also very helpful giving me advice and backing me up. 5 stars.

Get the 1k before you do anything, promises are meant to be broken.

£1300 for a standard turbo sounds a lot. I've seen k04 conversions done for less.
A reman turbo is what, £300? Then add few hours labour on top. Looking at around £600

That's not allot at all, new turbo from Audi is more than that, new from turbo technics is less but 1st you have to remove the old one which if it's 4wd takes longer, then fit a new one, that takes time & I've done some & on one engine fwd, it's an all day job which could stretch if the bolts are heat seized,

Reman turbos if £300 are with cheap inferior chinese internals, they dont last & it's definitely not a few hours work, no way.

Just posting an update here… finally got my new turbo installed. The reason it was expensive was because it was an OEM Borg Warner (170) turbo. Re-manufactured by Borg Warner themselves (as they don’t make the turbo new anymore). I had it professionally fitted at Camco in Warrington who are turbo specialists and know what they’re doing. Included oil feeder pipe all new gaskets and fittings etc. They were also very patient whilst I dealt with the warranty company. They finally paid up £1k and I covered the rest.
It’s now all sorted, siren sound has gone and drives even better than before.
