Hi Everyone,

I've set my sights on the new RS3 Sportback Carbon Black, and have a question about the DCC Drive Select damper option:

Is this achieved with different specification dampers or is it a software option that is enabled when the car is built?

The reason I ask is that I'm mainly looking at the used market if the prices ever come back below list. The only problem is that while many cars have been specced with the comfort and sound pack, the DCC drive select is quite rare and all I've heard from reviewers is that it's a must if I want a car that is comfortable on long journeys.

Is it an option that can be added to the car post-delivery?

Thanks in advance.

Different dampers I’m afraid, requires integration into other systems so it’ll be expensive and time consuming to retrofit.

If it’s a priority, buy a car with it fitted.

It’s totally different from the 8V magnetic particles filled fluid, it uses a valve system in the damper now.

The 8Y rides very well on it.

They are completely different dampers with a solenoid built-in to change the flow rate. The control system is also quite extensive.

Unfortunately, it's not just a software configuration to enable it. It's probably not feasible to retrofit the whole system to be honest.

VW used a valve system and Audi the magnetic ride with iron filings in the oil, interesting they 'seem' to have gone the VW direction

Yes the new dampers are very similar to the Golf R versions.

The only noticeable difference from exterior view is the multi-plug connections are on the side of the damper now, on the mag ride they were on the bottom of the front strut, and the top of the rear one.

Thanks for the answers everybody! I guess I'll be waiting a bit longer for the right car to become available. Or I just save for another year and buy new!

Or if anyone has actually bought or driven a car without the drive select dampers, how do you find the ride quality and handling on the standard dampers?

I had mag ride on my 8V pfl and I can’t feel any difference on my 8y with standard suspension.

Ok. Would you say you could do a long journey comfortably? Or do you reckon after a couple of hours it might be a bit too stiff?

This thread prompted me to take a look, and I hadn't realised how many of the Carbons didn't have the dynamic suspension. I managed to get one with the RS Dynamic Pack, and I knew I paid a premium, but some of the pricing of some cars in the market is ridiculous given their spec.

I was surprised too. Especially given how many people have praised how comfortable the car is with it. I assume most if not all press cars have it fitted.

And yeah I agree on the pricing too. At first glance, it's not too much of a price increase over the list price, but when you factor in the fact that these cars are used and have supposedly already taken that initial depreciation from being driven off the forecourt, then it just seems ridiculous.

Hopefully, once demand has dropped and/or supply picks up, we'll see normal service resume. The only problem is my current car won't be worth as much!

Sell it and get a push bike ;). Although the way things are at the moment, you'll be cycling for quite a while!

LOL :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:

We had this a couple of times on the R8 forum, everyone with a mag ride car said they would never buy a std shock car, and everyone with a std shock car said the ride was fine and the shocks were much cheaper to replace :)

I would say it’s fine all round. Early on in ordering you couldn’t order it separately. I think you could spec the dynamic suspension separately on a carbon later on. Thought about adding to order but decided against as it would have delayed the order. Glad I didn’t.
