Scary moment with RS3 today, coming back from Brecon Beacons, some German plated car pulled out in front of me then braked to turn left, there was no way on earth I was going to hit it and was just about to give it the F O horn when the pre sense flashed up and jammed the brakes on,
I immediately floored the throttle as there was a car close behind and nothing happened for about 3 seconds.
Not going there again, I have noticed a few times it's flashed up, much more sensitive than the system in the Golf, I thinbk I have switched the lot off, need to RTFM now to make sure

Yeah I’ve had that a few times. lol

Try using the Assist part of the adaptive cruise, now that’s the other end of the scale lol guessing if it’ll pull up in time…..

Well I came close to getting rear ended because of the FPOS system, whos fault would that have been? Mine/Audi's/or the bloke behind who is going to say ''he jumped on the brakes for no reason''?
By the way, the F Car knows better and has turned the system back on after an ignition off and back on GGGRRRRR

Had the same on a town dual carriageway, someone crossed the other side of the road to the centre paved area. My car slammed the brakes on, nearly gave myself whiplash

On the 8V there are I believe three settings for the pre sense front. Best to select the least intrusive setting because, as you now know, the system has to reset to on after every ignition cycle.

I don't think there's any doubt it would've been your fault. Audi would undoubtedly say the driving systems are used at your own risk and the guy behind you would be right if your car braked hard and for no reason that you would've braked had you not had the system on. Especially if he had a dash cam to prove you braked hard without sufficient cause :(

Any car behind should maintain enough distance in which they can stop should you need to brake for any reason.

Not guaranteed these days with the amount of numpties that populate the roads…….

I agree, but if you or the car brakes hard for no reason like these "crash for cash" :bell: ends, and it's captured on dash cam, the person behind won't be blamed.

Still, it annoyed me that it didnt respond to what I wanted it to do,

Having said that the car returned nearly 45mpg on the 90 miles trip home, ,that keeping to the speed limits, mainly 50/60/70 with a handfull of 30mph villages, thats pretty good for what it is :)

That's really encouraging mpg. :pileofpoop: off a shovel when you want and economical when you want that instead :)

I have a Mar' 22 RSQ3 SE on which the Pre Sense is frequently and randomly activated when there is no initiating circumstances, it's very unnerving. It's so bad my wife refuses to drive the car. Interestingly she has a Golf 8 R which has behaved itself impeccably. I notified the dealer to get the problem registered onto the Audi System and had the car checked, NFF. Camera recalibrated about a week ago. Extensive questionnaire sent to Audi UK Technical for investigation. Audi have asked me to continue driving the car and report any further instances. It's a bit of a worry, if someone rear ends me. I take little comfort from the fact that a following vehicle must leave sufficient distance to stop in time, whether emergency stop or otherwise. Just now deer are popping out onto the road everywhere up here sometimes causing a vehicle to do an emergency stop. There are numerous Audis reporting this dangerous fault.

The first 50 miles it was averaging 52mpg, although the terrain (just googled it) says we dropped 180 metres over the 50 miles.

It's weird, The RS3 will do 40mpg quite easy on a 50 mile run that we regularly do, my Golf R would only ever do around 37mpg on the same day out, yet, knocking about (mainly wifey driving) the Golf would generally average 32 but the RS3 around 29mpg

The lane assist is just as annoying. I’ve only driven Mrs Deadey’s S3 once and the lane assist was ******* around with the steering on a back road!

I’d hoped that when we finally get f’ing logged in to the car, it would remember being switched off.

Absolutely.

It would be unusual for it to not be their fault.

I've had the Pre-Sense flash up a few times but only activated brakes the other week for first time. Its annoying but its probably a millisecond before I activate the brakes anyway. In fact I thought Pre-Sense was only a warning and I had to brake myself (thought it was another option Audi charged you for). I have seen the presense button in the options but just left it as always a backup.

However, as discussed above, we don't drive in a perfect world and if the car suddenly thought there as obstacle in front and some idiot was tailgating, its not a good combo. Glad you are ok @Mike.46

Lane assist is like you driving with a toddler sat on your knee 'helping'

It can also be rather dangerous as well, I took a demo RS3 out and attacked a roundabout on a dual carraigeway, the 'lane assist' fought me every time we crossed a white line, it sort of fights you then lets go causing you to turn more than you planned, absolute PITA and in some instances downright dangerous

Can be set to 'Remember last setting' with VCDS/OBD11/Kufatec.de dongle and probably a few other programmes as well

I guess all this assist c*ap is the way forward for car companies and safety awareness preachers
But
As a rule the more you nanny people taking descicions away from them (like traffic lights on roundabouts ***) the less they will think for themselves

Give some people Full driver assist/ABS/Airbags etc and they'll think they are invincible and drive like an idiot (like a lot of young women seem to) stick a big spike on the steering wheel in place of the air bag and they will drive very carefully :)

I agree. The more our driving is automated, the worse we'll be at driving, expecting the car to think on our behalf. It's a slippery slope.

I think 75% of drivers on the road today aren’t able to think for themselves.

The amount that exhibit bad driving standards is shocking, idiots cutting corners at junctions, coming through when it’s not their right of way, and the ones that are looking down at a mobile, unbelievable………

When you deactivate lane assist, does that deactivate pre-sense also ?

No there is a separate setting in the MMI to turn it off and adjust its sensitivity. System also resets to on when car is restarted.

You can alter the assist to one of 3 settings, top of my head early/medium/late, whether that is sensitivity I dont know, all I do know for certain is when there was zero chance of me hitting anything it stood the car on it's nose and refused to accept my right foot flooring the throttle, I imagine the ecu is programmed to 'think' in the panic the driver has hit the wrong pedal?
It's the closest I have come to an accident in the last, well as long back as I can remember, last time was on a dual carraigeway/outside lane/stop/start traffic when I noticed a van coming at me far too fast, I shot onto the grass verge, the driver in the car now alongside me shook his head and gave me the w*nker hand signal, just about the same time the van hit him up the rear :)

I love it. The last bit of course. Is anyone else thinking of swapping from vorsprung to carbon black because of it having fewer gizmos, to minimise the potential for electronic interference all of a sudden? I know things like the pre-sense are still there but it sounds scary all of a sudden :(

Ive had a few Golfs before the Audi, mk7 2.0 tdi/mk7 GTD and the Golf R, the crash avoidance stuff got better in each car, the first Mk7 I had didnt like a lot of stuff like metal posts/ railings and cyclists, the last one I had I think I got the warning about 2 or 3 times in 4 1/2 years, I have had the warning about 6 times now in the RS3 and the one 'activation' which was more like no warning and then a 'F*ck I missed that car ill go straight to full brakes and seat belt tensioners then'' from the ecu

Scary stuff. I think it'll need coding out to be sure. I definitely want to be in charge of the car rather than the car in charge of me! That's where being alert and driving in a style for the prevailing weather conditions has served me well over the last 22 years of driving.

But then your insurance is also based on the safety systems as well, just a ''remember last setting'' code would work for me like I did with Lane assist, why anyone would want that system active is beyond me, it wont even let you set the car to open the corner up, just wants the car to go down the middle of the road, once all these 'safety systems'' are mandatory it's time to either go back in car age a couple of years of just take the Bus

Just cant see the point of an RS Car that wont go too fast, steers/brakes and accelerates for you, might as well just buy a Tesla and have a sleep until you get there
Stepford Wives springs to mind here......................................

I dont think the car is in charge tbh, it just helped at the wrong time, maybe a software glitch? Ive thought a few times when using adaptive cruise that the radar unit misses somethings, like staionary traffic for eg, it picks up moving traffic but seems to have issues picking up cars stopped in front of you, say at traffic lights

VW moved theirs out of the lower grille to behind the VW badge

True. Although if having a system that "helps" in such an unpredictable way is worrying. I agree though, having it coded seems to be the answer. Did you do the lane assist coding yourself?

According to the manual it doesn’t work with stationary traffic!

DF849E7F 8966 49E8 BC77 62A6A88CCC5A

On my old A5 and current S5 to be fair it works pretty well in the background but they had sensors either side rather than one in the middle. You can turn also it off it you want to and it remembers the last settings which suits me

it has only gone off unexpectedly a couple of times, either on a roundabout where some idiot suddenly decided to switch lanes or on quick bend with walls near the kerb.

^ The adaptive cruise does 'sometimes' pick up staionary traffic, for instance it picks traffic up that it has seen stop in the distance and sometimes it picks it up when it hasnt seen it, I use the adaptive cruise quite a lot, in 20/30/40 speed limits for sure, it's very well programmed although can be a little 'jerky' in stop start traffic, I actually try and confuse it from time to time just to see how good it is!
In the Golf it could also be set to race/normal/relaxed (I think it was) which would stop the jerky stuff and slow the acceleration as well.

As a note to the ''Audi pre sense does not react to diagonally crossing cyclists'' I think they learned that early on, we went to Lake Vyrnwy in our first Mk7 Golf, you can hire cycles and ride around the lake, the car would not overtake any cyclist at all on the narrow road, it activated the crash signal as soon as it saw one

Many people hate these semi-autonomous features.
It's a naff design from the car maker that they cannot be switched off completely.
They can be dangerous if the driver doesn't want to use them, so they should not be re-activated when the car is turned back on.
The driver should have total control of the vehicle.

Absolutely no chance of that happing - slowly but surely we are on course for fully automated driving.

Just google NCAP Vision Zero which all the major manufacturers have signed up to.

Iv started to question if I actually will want another brand car given all the tech they now come with to comply with increasingly stringent safety, noise and emissions regs which takes all the fun away + makes some people think they are bullet proof drive like idiots

^^ it is proven that as soon as you start to automate stuff the human won't bother to check it. Recipe for disaster imho as automation continues to creep in.

Me, I will just stop buying new cars at some point assuming it continues un-checked.
