Having read the horror stories about the cooling system on my S3 I decided to change the coolant expansion bottle 'With silicone' for an O.E. coolant expansion bottle 'without Silicone' as looking through the cap hole I was not able to see the 'Bag'.
This turned out to be literally a 10 minute job

Firstly the two pipes were unclipped off the side of the expansion bottle and the electrical connector for the level sensor was disconnected, the 2 plastic securing clips at the back of the bottle were then released with a flat bladed screw driver, which meant that the bottle could be raised enough to get a jug underneath it.

Then using a pair of pliers releasing the small diameter expansion hose from the top of the bottle, the bottle can be tipped into the jug and emptied. (Fluid will not come out of the cap hole very well) the larger hose on the bottom of the bottle can then be released again with pliers and the bottle removed.

My bottle had a build up of scum inside it at just above the maximum level but no evidence of a 'bag' inside it.
it was then just a simple job of replacing the pipes and clips onto the new bottle and refilling it with freshly mixed G13 fluid, and then placing it down onto the plastic clips, I did this thinking that the higher it was during filling the less likely that air would be trapped in the pipework.

So this job has raised a mystery,,, where is the silicone bag ??? did the previous owner remove it? I doubt the previous owner even had the bonnet open!! If the bag bursts does it then decompose and totally dilute into the coolant? currently my heater operates as expected, although I have had one incidence of the fluid level changing I am not regularly using fluid and there were no signs of fluid on the undertray when I removed it for servicing! I suppose the answer to all these questions is 42.

Tidy writeup & preventive measures are always useful. Let me check my shed for your missing silica bag, if I find it I promise I'll return it ;)

Nicely written up. The silicone bag popped on mine and blocked the heater matrix so you're wise to replace the reservoir and without the silicone bag!

After the bag had 'popped' was there anything left in the coolant expansion bottle???

Now that you mention it, no there wasn't. When i got the matrix out, the water that came out of it was full of a yellowish debris.

So maybe the bag just breaks down altogether....?! Who knows

Was cleaning out the matrix a big job?
To replace the matrix took the best part of a day for me to do. I'm by no means a mechanic, just determined.

full centre console and glove box out job.

bought a 2nd hand matrix of ebay for £30.

If your matrix is blocked, red flags I noticed are heating on max and only cold air comes out (even when car is up to temp) and loss of coolant after a long journey.

Just changed my expansion tank. Many thanks to the op for the how to guide. It literally is a 10minute job.
Obtained a new OE tanks from VW, who confirmed it is now without silica bag.
I used a large syringe to drain the tank first.

I fished out the silica bag from my tank within a few days of buying my 8V in 2023.
An absolutely insane idea to have that time bomb in there IMHO.

I'm about to replace that horrible expansion tank with the silica bag inside.

The latest revision is currently 5Q0 121 407 AA.

According to Audi, the coolant does not need to be changed regularly even though the new tank does not have that silica. Is this true or do you recommend changing the coolant every 5 years, for example?

Which fluid should I use, G13 or G12evo?

You can just remove the bag from the existing tank after removing the tank from the car, no need to replace the tank if there are no problems with it.

Confusingly, G12evo has replaced G13. I believe G13 was causing corrosion on some aluminium parts. I think you can mix G12evo with G13, if you look online I'm sure you will find a compatibility matrix.

Not sure on the extended coolant change interval. I had left it for 7 years on the original coolant before changing it and nothing bad happened in the 2 years it was overdue...

Thanks for the help!

Part only cost me 16€ here in Finland, i get some discount from work so i'm just lazy and fit the new bottle rather than fissing out the bag

Yes the coolant types are a little bit confusing.

I guess i just go with the G13 that i have in the car right now. Some point i can disconnect the lower radiator hose and drain there as much as i can and top of the G12evo.

Anyone replacing a "Mit Silikat" with one without a silicate pouch should really dump the old G13, which required regular "dosing" with extra silicate to maintain its effectiveness as a corrosion "preventer", flush with distilled water and refill with G12evo which does not need or use silicate.

After some research i agree with this. I'm planning to do full flush and change the G13 to G12evo on next service which is august.

After that i think i replace the coolant about 5-7 years.
