Gearbox (02Q) Ticking/Clicking on Idle and under Drive

Afternoon All,

I'm looking for some opinions and suggestions on what could be causing the ticking noise heard in the video attached below.
The noise occurs when the clutch is out on idle and whilst driving, it then disappears when the clutch is depressed.
The noise does not disappear or change when the car has driven a long (250 mile) journey.

Listening underneath the car, the noise is definitely loudest around the clutch and flywheel area. I'm far from an expert in gearboxes but I do understand that the DMF is a common wear item on these cars, but my thoughts are this noise would continue even when the clutch is depressed as its still rotating? I'm wondering if it's the release bearing or perhaps axial movement along the input shaft?

Finally can anyone recommend a good place to get this fixed/diagnosed (Midlands area)



For reference the car is a 2.0Tdi FWD (CFFB engine) with just under 80k on the clock.
 
I would say it's the release bearing. If you want it fixing gearbox would need to come off and at that point the DMF could be checked as well. Instead of fully depressing the clutch to stop the noise how far does the clutch need to be depressed to stop it. If it's just enough to start disengaement of the clutch and thus put pressure on the release bearing then it's more likely to be the release bearing.
I would strongly recommend Midlands VW , I have used them myself a few times over the years and they are very good without breaking the bank.

Good idea, I'll give that I try this afternoon and let you know.

I did consider attempting the fix myself but after seeing a couple of videos, it seems quite a struggle on a driveway?

Thanks for the suggestion, only about an hour from me so I'll get in touch with them.
 
At least your car is FWD so don't have the issues and weight of a transfer box. The 02M, 02Q gearboxes are not the lightest and some kind of a transmission jack is really needed to make it easy to do.
 
Your prediction was correct, only a slight amount of pressure on the clutch and the noise disappears. I’ll let you know the outcome and if I decide to attempt it myself…
