Well I've had no luck, all fitted and tucked away fine but the box doesn't do anything to switch over to carplay. I've got 3G+ but the box only says 3G so possibly have been sent the wrong one.

Has anyone bothered upgrading the firmware on theirs recently (mine's has been working like a charm so I've left it alone)

Has anyone fitted a similar kit to the 2g mmi, I'm fairly sure that's what I've got though some websites says its 3g screen. Its 2013 with concert and no media controls below the gearstick?
Does anyone know how to stop these units draining the battery slowly?

I seem to recall this was achieved through FW. Probably best for you to contact where you got yours from and request the latest FW for it.
