I would have thought modern turbos are water cooled and oil lubricated. They would have thought about the implications of the start/stop..

    Sorry, I’ve no other information.

All I know is it’s meant to be coming in on Friday and will be ready early next week.

I’ll try and get more information out of them when I collect my car.

    Yay, I have an update...

    "Dear Mr Grumpz,

Turbo has now been fitted we are waiting to test drive this but there is a bedding in procedure which will need to be followed as well.

MMI has been checked and the fault confirmed and we have found a TPI from Audi which states we need to check wiring which we will be doing today but it will be going into tomorrow and we will give you a further update once we have located the wiring.

    Kind Regards,"

Does anyone know what the bedding in procedure is???

In regards to the MMI/VC/HUD, mine has crashed a few times requiring a reset of the MMI system. I mentioned this when I took the car in and they said they'd take a look and hopefully it would just be a software update.

The fact they have to check wiring doesn't fill me with confidence for a number of reasons :(

My car is in for the second time now over the last few months, this time however its been at my local dealership for nearly 4 weeks. I don't have a buzzing noise but like you, the car has to get to operating temperature first before it's noticeable. The sound is more of a wooden knocking noise, like a wooden block on a xylophone that's been deadened. Parts have been replaced, listening equipment has been used, still no joy!

This sounds very much like my problem. Half an hour after being started. Almost a creak? My car goes to the local Audi dealer on 26th? Should we start a separate thread?

I’ve been looking around, apparently the 1.4 TFSI engine mounts have some form of noise issue on some Q3’s. I’m sure that over the 4 weeks now my car has been in for that engine and gearbox mounts will have been inspected however, whatever the issue, I hope it’s resolved soon. Let’s see what it is first.

In the meantime, here is a brief review of the Q3 I’ve had for the past four weeks: It costs how much?

Is not the current Q3 a different platform as it is a transverse engine, thus the mounts will be different...

    Nice one @firebits

    Mines still ongoing...

    Dear Mr Grumpz,

I can confirm that the turbo has been fitted and we are happy with the repair, however the car cannot be over revved because this needs to follow a bedding in process, which you will do yourself once you get the car back.

Regarding your MMI screen we are speaking to Audi Technical, as we have found a TPI which is a process that Audi have already confirmed could be an issue as similar issues have been found, however this is proving to test ok so we are waiting for them to respond to us.

I do apologise that this is taking longer than we expected Mr Grumpz we are trying to get this sorted as quickly as possible.

    Sick as a blooming chip

I’ve belonged to a few forums and not seen as many faults being reported on a new car (2 yr old model, b9). This is meant to be Audi.

Yup, my 2016 A3 was faultless in the time I had it.

The issues don’t bother me, it’s the time it takes to get them rectified that’s getting on my pip

Well, latest update is I’ve eventually got my car back after 27 days.

The turbo has been replaced and seemingly I have to bed this in, although they didn’t tell me how to do this (and I forgot to ask). They’re ‘hopeful’ that this has fix the strange sound.

The MMI has apparently been updated after being instructed by Audi. Looking at the MMI version I’m on 0678, can anyone confirm if this is the latest version?

After complaining about the length of time it’s taken to fix, pointing out that I’ve paid a months finance for a car I’ve not sat in for said month, they quickly offered me a cheque for £250.

Your firmware version sounds to be the same as mine, but I'll look in the morning. In AudiWorld they are talking about version number 1118 at least and possibly 1242 was available in february...

Just as I suspected, i’m Pretty sure they’ve told me a pack of lies just to get my car back, hoping the issue won’t reappear.

I wish I’d noted the software version before I took it in.

They’re going to get the service manager to call me back 1st thing in the morning.

I’ve been driving like a saint since Monday night, very light on the throttle and not going over 2k on the revs until it’s bedded in. Today I drove down to Oxford, came off the M1 after 3 hours steady driving and bam, I heard the noise.

Here’s the noise that’s apparently been fixed, clearly audible...

Hopefully 2nd time is the charm. Should be getting ours back next week. To look on the bright side at least you have a new turbo.

So, presumably not the turbo then. You've previously said that the noise only happens when on the move. Surely if it was the turbo it would still make the noise when stationary and the engine is revved, and the garage would be able to say for sure if it was definitely the turbo. Maybe heat expansion causing some rubbing in the running gear or pulley bearings or even the cooling fan rubbing with the airflow going over it when on the move. Only thing I've ever heard similar in a car was in a 1984 Volvo - used to pick up interference from the engine over the radio in long wave or medium wave which sounded like that whine.

I've absolutely no idea what the issue could be.

I took the technician out in the car this morning and sure enough within an hour the car started making the sound.

The car's in again, lets see what happens this time.

I did receive an email from the garage yesterday...

    Dear Mr Grumpz,

I can confirm that Technical have come back to us and advised us to carry out a procedure which we are currently doing today, I will give you a call/ email tomorrow with a further update.

I’ve not had any update (yet) so I’m guessing it’s not worked.

So today’s update is they’re convinced the noise isn’t coming from the engine bay...

They now think it’s coming from around the brake/accelerator pedal area :wtf:

I know you've previously thought that my (ex) problem was different but maybe time to reconsider? "Modification & lubrication of a front chassis leg plate" was the diagnosis. Only manifested when the car was warm. Half an hour after start up.

Not sure if the sound your hearing is the same sound I had on my 1.6 TDI. Happened once warmed up and near enough everytime it hit 3000rpm. Sometimes it did it as 2000rpm. The noise always seemed to disappear a few hundred rpm after though.
