Hi

I recently bought a 1.6 petrol non turbo 8p a3. However, I was unaware at the time that the car has been remapped very badly. The map is causing my emissions and engine management lights to show (they were taped over when I bought it) and is also making the car very uneconomical. I have been to a few “vw group Specialists” but non of them say they will touch it as they don’t deal with remapped cars. One garage told me that the ecu has been “locked” and I have no choice but to go to Audi and have it wiped, although there’s no guarantee that would even work and i would potentially have to buy a new ecu from Audi themselves (too expensive for me...) has anyone had any experience like this or any recommendations?
Thanks

I’d go back to the guy you bought it from, cave his face in, get your money back and start looking again.

Disgusting that people can do that and think they can get away with it

Well, if it has been remapped then simple reflash will get it back into stock. That’s the first option. The second one is bdm if the ecu is obd “locked” (highly doubt that it’s locked against reflash). Third one is to replace ECU and clone immo data. If you need any further assistance give us a shout mate.

Finding someone who has a stock map for the 1.6 fsi engine would be difficult i imagine, you could try and see if a remap from a reputable company such as Celtic tuning will make the car drivable.

Presuming that the current bad map hasn't caused any damage, either way after you get the map sorted and i straight away do a major service to avoid future problems and help make the car smooth.

I can recommend 2 guys on here to get in contact with as they know there way around the Vcd's and that's @NHN or @DJAlix , maybe even a good tuner could get it back to stock , ( there is a few the guys swear by but I cannot mind there names , simple search in builds will help )

Vcds is not gonna help here as it’s a coding and diagnostic tool. The OP needs Specilist tuner. Locking ECU maps is not uncommon and if this is the case then he will need someone with the correct tools to “virginise” the ECU before it can then be flashed via standard, or indeed OEM tools, back to stock.

Personally I would just buy a used stock ECU and have that installed.

Cheers for that info.

Hi mate, would buying a used ecu be doable? I’m under the impression that I can’t buy just an ecu as I can’t pull the information from my current one and transfer it to a new one (mileage, engine number etc) as the current one is ‘bricked’.

Where in the country are you?
You need to find a good custom tuner to either put you a good remap on the car or they will be able to put it back to stock for you if you don’t like the idea of a remap.
The other option of changing the ECU should be the last resort.
By the time you’ve bought a new ECU and then paid for someone to swap it over for you, it will have cost you a lot more than what it would cost to go to a tuner for a proper remap or for the tuner to put it back to standard for you.
Putting it back to standard for you on your current ECU should be no problem at all for a good well established tuner.

I’m in Derbyshire. I have messaged a few local tuners but most say they can’t do anything. Any recommendations of a well established one?

You do have the 1.6 fsi motor right, if so quantum remap, I’ve heard good thing about it from my local vag specialist lion garage (they do have a derby branch as well). I was going to do it to mine but I’m still thinking about it.

Find someone who can just read eeprom from your ecu, send it to me, and I will send you a cloned ecu with stock firmware :)

I very well may take you up on that if I can find someone to get that from my car. What sort of price range would you be asking for?

West Yorkshire Tuning (I follow it on Facebook and they did my remap).
However I would imagine it would be atleast an hour and half away from you or even 2 hours. I’m confident he could solve your problem though, he regularly has cars in with bad remaps where he puts them back to stock and then replaces that with a custom remap. I’ve also seen that he has cloned and replaced a few ECU’s so I’m pretty sure he would know how to sort your problem.

As an authorised VW Group services provider I have coded in loads of "used" ECU's and other control modules. Need to find someone with the correct tools.

Can you call the guy who sold it to you and ask who mapped your car. You could then go to the original tuner and ask for your original map to be flashed back into your car. Any tuner worth there salt would store the O.E. map.
