i cleared the code last night and took the car out on a drive to the shops, 25 miles mostly dual caraigeway no codes, did an hour of shopping and on my way home eml light comes on, car is more responsive and fuel comsumpion falls, so im guessing the egr staying closed.

i'm i correct ?

engine is 1.6 fsi, code BLF, i was going to try to take the egr off and inspect it if i find out the correct way of doing it, reading some mk5 golf forums with the same engine it turns out the plastic gears within the egr motor can break.

anyone got advice what i should try and do

I had similar on my 2.0 and ended up replacing the egr valve. The aluminium body is cleanable but the motor isn’t repairable as on mine is all one unit so just replaced and been fine ever since. It cost about £250 ish incl gaskets from TPS.

Looking online, seems like my motor (wheel the gears inside of it) are serviceable. I will take it apart tomorrow if I have time and see what’s up

Good news the egr gears are serviceable, just remove the torx screws, they are able to be removed with a torx driver. As I guessed and seen on the golf forums, the egr gear had broken some teeth but as the egr only turn about 45° for the time being I just rotated the gear. so their wasn’t ain’t broken gears so the egr operates as I wait for a new gear to be delivered.

Here’s some pictures to show what I am on about
