Drivers door sensor - always closed?

Hi all, first post here on the forum..

I have an A3 2002 1.8T sport. One slight annoyance is that when I open the drivers door, the sensor doesn't usually release and the car 'thinks' the door is still closed - so no door lights come on, the door shows as closed on the dashboard graphic display, and if you have the headlights on no buzzer warning alarm sounds (so it's easy to forget and drain the battery).

I'm guessing that somehow the sensor in the door is getting stuck. Does anyone have any experience of this, or have any suggestions for what I can try to get it working properly?
