So I'm hopefully going to be walking out of the Audi dealership today having purchased an S3 Sportback (chrome edition).

Just a few questions...

Can I use a Carwow discount on the car even though its used? Or is that only for brand new cars?

Is it worth getting gap insurance?

Also anyone got any haggling tips?

Cheers

Car wow discount is on new car. If you Pick the right deal you can get a new one cheaper than used usually the interest rates are higher on used Audi approved. The end of this month will be a end of a quarter so if you can haggle a good deal on a new one.
I bought mine off car wow you want two dealers and play them off against each other my local ones weren't interested in a deal.

Gap insurance is a must, but don't buy off the dealer unless they can price match.

Tips,
Go with knowledge of other S3's in dealerships within a certain radius. Say you intend to go look at them maybe later today or tomorrow

When it comes to price, name the price you want to pay. If they don't come near it, or say there is no room for discount etc (usual patter) then simply say, you'll go check out the other cars instead. They don't want you to leave and buy another dealers car.

Where about are you?

I had a specific price I wanted to pay when I went into the dealer last month. I had a trade in which I would normally focus on trying to get the best price for, but being a cash buyer all that really mattered was my price to change.
I told the salesman I had a price in mind but did not reveal this when asked, instead telling him to give me his best price to do the deal. The car I was buying was brand new and expected him to be way off what I had in mind, so I was surprised when he initially came back with only 1 grand over.
I then told him my price and before I left he had got within £300 of what I wanted to pay.
I visited another dealer straight after and used the same method but the closest they could get was £1500 over what I wanted to pay.
I slept on it then phoned the first dealer the next day and said throw in a free first service and I'll do the deal.
Right up till pick up day I didn't know exactly how much he had discounted the new car, but with the knowledge of how much my trade in should be and how much discount was available via carwow, this is where I arrived at the figure I had in mind....and probably reducing it a bit in my head. :D
As it turned out the discounted price of the new car was actually better than anything on carwow, the cheapest of which I would have had a 600 mile round trip.
I was very pleased, was a very straightforward stress free experience......significantly helped by the fact that I was prepared to forget it if I wasn't entirely happy with the deal. :)

Regarding GAP....as above never buy from a dealer because they can cost hundreds of pounds more for the same cover. There are a few out there but I use Car2Cover. Cost £208 for 3 years Vehicle Replacement Insurance on my S3 Black Edition.

Im going through the Ipswich dealership

I just purchased my car via Ipswich Audi. It however, was a new S3. The discount was ~£6700.

Get the gap insurance elsewhere. In fact, all of the "extras" you can get done elsewhere for cheaper.

Don't tell them your price, get the best deal first they say they can give you. Then pop down to Chelmsford Audi and do the same and see who's giving the best price. If prices aren't spot on, ask for things to be chucked in like Ron240 mentioned, e.g. servicing. Obviously once you've got the prices, go back and mention you expected it to be £x less and see what they can do.

You got a brand new S3 Black Edition for around 33 grand. :openmouth:
Wow and double WOW!
Cue the people saying "I paid less than that" :D

Edit.
Just noticed it's sportback you've got and not saloon.....but you probably have a few options on it. :)

Yeh the original price (OTR) was £39975. haha definitely, it's a bit like buying a new build house, no point in comparing who got what deal. As long as you're happy with the deal you got and enjoy it, it's all good :D

Another good point is that your road tax next year will be £140 and not £450. :)
This was a factor I made sure about when buying mine.

Yeh that's exactly what I was going for too. There wasn't any other options that were worthwhile enough to justify having to pay the extra tax.

Since buying my 1st Audi 10 years ago I have always paid £200 for GAP.

3 cars later on every occasion I TELL THEM that is what I will pay and they always agree :)

Cheers for the help guys. Im planning on buying the car out right over 4 years with a fairly big deposit. Dont wanna go over 350 a month too.

I might try a personal loan instead as I'm assuming that will save a little money.

How did you get that massive discount? If I got that on a new S3 in the spec I want I'll get it cheaper than the pre-owned one I was looking at.

Out of curiosity, what %age discount did you achieve....

It worked out to 9%......which doesn't seem a lot but just narrowly beat the cheapest quote I received on carwow, so I was happy. :)

£6,700 discount elaborate..............,it was a sportback right....what else has it got....was it a in stock car....or a factory order as all these factors are dependant on what kind of discount you get?

Trust me a well optioned S3 is worth grudgingly paying for a nice spec car....residuals/private sale......MIGHT BE.....@S3 Muzzy.....Apples off this cart before mate............lol

They accept because you are over paying. My last GAP was £140 over 3 years for return to invoice. :smile new:s

Factory order. Initially they had matched the carwow discount for me (£4800 i think). Then I put a car on order with him, there was an issue with this order and I had to attach myself to another factory order which would delay me by around another month getting the car. I said i'd just go get the car from DriveTheDeal.com instead as the wait was the same. Then they matched the discount they were offering. Obviously bear in mind this includes the audi finance contribution too of £1,700 or something along those lines.

Are you a cash buyer or using finance? That might be part of it if it's cash.

Contributions aside you've got the largest discount l have ever heard of on here , 17% is the largest ever boasted on this forum, but again discounts are all relevant to residuals at the time of resale

9% is Gash..........13% at this stage of the game is standard
I was being courteous. I myself have just signed on the dotted line two days ago with a discount I am v happy with. Out of curiosity, what is ‘this stage’ of the game....?

Finance. I just tried seeing what offers I could get on Carwow....one was 5k, but I can only see options for PCP and cash...can I not use a Carwow deal for a HP contract?

Your arrangement is with the dealer not carwow, so you can negotiate hp with the quoted dealer based on the cash price, but naturally there will be the regular charges for doing so.

I should have said, stage of production with the all new car arriving next year
Works like this, early adopters of new models will get smaller discounts but at the other end very high residuals
Exact opposite applies to late adopters larger discounts lower residuals
It's large discounts that fooks up residuals

Cool. Be interesting to hear what people’s residuals were back when the facelift was first available for comparison. When was that, (I know the A3 facelift first hit mid 2016 but not sure bout the S3?).

Nice one cheers. Its gonna be cheaper if I get a personal loan to help pay for the rest of the car. Glad I didnt get the pre-owned one yesterday as I can get a new one for pretty much the same price and only pay £150 on tax.

They try to shove PCP deals at people straight away. I went to look at a Fiesta ST to replace my Twingo RS as a run-a-round, and without even asking my situation in regards to payment. Cash buyer, HP, PCP? they immediately started quoting PCP deals at me. Lost interest after that.

So did you buy a S3 then?

I think its just kind of the assumed way to buy a car nowdays really on PCP...

My dealer was sending me PCP quotes, on the day I went to sign the paperwork I changed my mind, turned up and said I wanted to pay in cash. Wasn't any resistance from them about it though.

Wow!! Well done. I was only able to squeeze £6 000 out. I was chased to the parking lot when I said no initially, and they pulled me back in offering me Full Tank of fuel and a £200 fuel card. Should have pushed for the first service. Live and learn.

So just having gone through all this, I found that taking a balloo(GFV) payment is better than a personal loan. The final value is charged at 3.3% interest over the duration of your payment terms. Be difficult to find a lenders who would offer you those rates.

No idea what a balloo payment is, dont think I've ever heard of it, but it its cheaper I'll look into it.

Used cars usually attract a much higher interest rate though I think 10.9% was advertised at my local dealer recently. Even on a new car APR is around 6.9% which is the norm, so not quite sure how you’d get to 3.3% unless it was a personal loan.

Audi do promotions seen a local ad 3-2% to 6-2% used

another option is to haggle your best price, take the Audi Finance deal (as will include money towards deposit if new), then pay off within 2 weeks from your own loan. £350 p/m should be easily achievable IMO
