Hello all,

I've finally entered my first step of Audi ownership. I'll post some pictures of the car up soon, but have just bought a 56 plate S4 Avant Auto with 100,000 miles on the clock and Audi service history. So far I love it, it's very smooth and has some great power and I'm really enjoying the Auto box!

I'm building a list of things that I want to do, call me critical/picky but I notice lots of detail and it will irritate me not knowing if some of these have been properly carried out or not! Of course please chime in to tell me if I've missed anything obvious and can you let me know if the parts are correct?:

Gearbox & diff oil change
The autobox lurches sometimes when dropping from 2nd to 1st. I'm going to carry out a gearbox oil and filter change in the hope that it helps. Is Castrol Transmax Z ATF the right stuff and how much will I need? Opie are suggesting "ZF Lifeguard 8 ATF" instead.
Similarly differential oil capacity & flavour - Is Castrol SAF-XO 75w90 correct and how much?
Can you recommend an Audi specialist in Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire? I might ask them to get the change done.

Engine service
I'm going to carry out an engine service too (call me paranoid) with some Castrol Edge Titanium 5w-30, a filter and some Bosch FGR7KQE0 's. Correct oil? What capacity?
I would normally use Prestone, any advice on something different and capacities?

Brake fluid
Is standard DOT5 OK for the brakes?

Everything else:
  • Having massively out of date (2006 originals!) satnav maps, even though I don't use them that often, will annoy me. I'll source a decent replacement disc.
  • Where's the best place to get Audi parts from? Audi themselves? How do you guys rate the Eurocarparts oil filters if I were to use them?
  • Other than using VCDS, is there a way to change the service intervals from Longlife to fixed?
  • Change the wipers. They're a little old, just going to go with the usual Bosch aero's
  • Are there any ECU/TCU firmware updates that I should get Audi (or someone else?) to do to the car?
  • What's the neatest way to get bluetooth and ideally DAB into the car?
  • Interior LED bulb change
  • Connolise the leather. It's a bit grubby.
  • Full alignment check
  • If I haven't bankrupted myself after that little list, a set of tyres!

I'm off to rob a bank to pay for all of this!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the fold, yes let's have some pics please!

Happy to help with your DAB/Bluetooth/sat-nav queries, the old RNS-E units are pretty dated and not worth the hassle IMO. Get it swapped out with something new, lots of options but there's a bit of farting about with Bose/non-bose related compatibility fun. Pop over to the in car entertainment section of the forum and there's plenty of info there to get you started.

Hi mate. Congrats. I’ve recently got a new car too, but am replying as you want some garage recommendations. I’ve not use them by self, but during buying process of other cars, i called TOTAL VAG in Leighton buzzard for a quote, had some helpful advice so I think I may go back for some actual work.

Also heard good things about Camford Car Care in Luton.

Hi. Just to update sorry, I made a mistake in the above recommendation.

I was meant to mention VAG Tech in Milton Keynes instead of total vag.

Nothing against total vag. Just got the name wrong.

Don’t use dot 5 as it’s silicone based

You can run dot 4 or 5.1

I use dot 5.1 as has a slightly higher wet boiling point

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. I've updated each section below...still lots of answers needed! Please help!

Gearbox & diff oil change
The autobox lurches sometimes when dropping from 2nd to 1st. I'm going to carry out a gearbox oil and filter change in the hope that it helps.
In the end I used Hitchin Audi who got me the correct parts for the change. Quite simple process, although messy. Took about 4hrs in total with a bit of faffing and waiting for the gearbox oil to cool down in between fills.
I got about 5 litres (or is it quarts?) of the correct fluid in, eventually. My god was the fill plug on tight! Had to use one of our super powerful impact guns at work to get it off.
Worked perfectly, I have super silky gear changes once again. I can't recommend doing this enough to everyone!
I also did a throttle body alignment and a kick-down re-learn, they might have helped a little bit too?
I do have to say that Audi Hitchin were great. They got me the right parts, quickly, but also a print out of the original spec, details of it's previous Audi service history too, all while I waited :icon thumright:

I think this is the next job, I trust that the previous servicing has been done correctly, but I'm going to do it myself and carry on more regularly. Any advice on the parts would be much appreciated.

Everything else:
  • Replace the broken rear wiper arm spring,
  • Having massively out of date (2006 originals!) satnav maps, even though I don't use them that often, will annoy me. I'll source a decent replacement disc.
  • Change the service intervals from Longlife to fixed?
  • Change the wipers. They're a little old, just going to go with the usual Bosch aero's
  • Are there any ECU/TCU firmware updates that I should get Audi (or someone else?) to do to the car?
  • What's the neatest way to get bluetooth and ideally DAB into the car?
  • Interior LED bulb change
  • A new set of interior mats and a boot liner.
  • Get the drivers door scratch and roof chip sorted.
  • Connolise the leather. It's a bit grubby.
  • Sort the peeling gearknob button.
  • Full alignment check
  • Refurb & balance the wheels
  • If I haven't bankrupted myself after that little list, a set of tyres!

I'm still after a decent parts source, unless that is Audi. Also are there any parts diagrams out there on the Internet? It would make searching for parts much easier!

Thanks!
