Hello,

I have a 2014 A4 Avant 2.0TFSI Quattro S-Tronic which seems to be struggling to get up to temperature, it just hovers around the 70 oC mark, where I'm sure it stayed at around 90 when I've noticed before, I'm hoping this might explain the poor MPG as well!

My questions are:

Does anyone know if changing the thermostat will help as it may be jammed open letting the coolant flow through?

Where abouts is the thermostat on this engine (I belive its an E888? Correct me if I'm wrong...)?

How big of a job is it to change?

Is there just a thermostat or are there other sensors (coolant, etc) that would need to be changed?

I've had a good search about but cant find anything particularly relevant to this model.

Any help very much appreciated!

Thanks.

Sure sounds like the thermostat, (been through 3 of these on 2 cars now :) ) changing it will resolve a stuck open thermostat. You will usually need new coolant as it will mostly be lost, and if it inst in a position where it all pours out, is worth new fluid as isn't much more to do money or labour wise.
They recomend you should always change the sensor at the same time, but I only did this once out of the 3 i have had fail, so depends how tight ya feeling.
about 35 -40 quid for a replacement part looking on google for your engine. No videos or guides for the b8 but plenty on the a3 8p 2.0tfsi, have a look at that and see if it looks the same layout :). gsf car parts, euro car parts or use the 'Parts request' button at the top.

Havent changed on this engine but took 30 mins on my old golf at home few years back, and the audi I was charged 30 mins labour after bringing my own part so not much usually on any car.

Thanks for the response! Sounds like a fairly common issue... I'd quite like to have a go at changing it myself, just hope I dont break something else or bottle it half way through. Am I likely to cause any damage leaving it for a while or should it be ok?

I have the same model A4 as you & mine gets to 90° within a mile, extremely quick. I believe the coolant runs around a 'jacket' around the exhaust manifold So should definitely get above 70°

Thanks for this Booboo, I see you managed to find a Black Edition! Would you be able to tell me what sort of MPG you are getting around town and on the motorway etc?
After a 10 mile commute including A roads and town driving I noticed while sat in traffic that the temp needle is down to 50-60oC so I think its definetley knackard. This ain't right after 12 ish miles....

Definitely not right mate. Mine goes straight to the 90° with in 10 minutes
Around town I get lower 20s
On a run mid 30s

Thanks Booboo - MPG sounds about the same.... getting it booked in, I can't leave it like that!

Spoke to one garage (VAG Specialist) - about £200 for the part from Audi which is a 'coolant regulator' apparantly + 2 hours labour to fit + VAT
Spoke to another garage (regular independent garage) whos said the cold air is probably making the temperature fluctuate and it'll be fine once the weather warms up, reckons his golf does the same.
Both said it wont cause any damage to the engine, just make it drink more fuel. Do I bother changing the part or just leave it? Decisions decisions...

I've got the same problem in my 2.0 tfsi. It will get up to 90 within a couple of miles, then next thing it's at 70 degrees. If sat in traffic it will stay at 90, but cruising on motorway it fluctuates.

Not yet, I only noticed it a couple of weeks ago. I spoke to my regular mechanic who said "sounds like a sensitive thermostat" and to monitor it. He didn't think it was much to worry about though.

Good to know, thanks - I will change it eventually but if it can wait I'll bundle it in with a service.

Interesting , I was considering a new sensor or thermostat as on my b8 2.0tfsi S-tronic I get 12-18mpg in daytime city traffic , but can get 35-40mpg on a steady longer run with motorway journey.
My temp is always at 90 though, warms up after 5-10 mins.
Have been running it in sport mode though recently to try to get it to warm up quicker , and less s-tronic gear changes which I suspect hammers the mpg. Plus it’s a Quattro , so that sucks a couple more
