Hello All,

I was wondering about the legality of a front licence plate delete?

Is this legal? I have seen cars like the A6 for example without plates and loved the clean look on the A3/S3.
I have been contemplating removing my front plate and getting it wrapped onto the bumper,
if not removed all together.

I was wanting to know if anyone knows anything about the legal consequences of this, if any ?

If you're in the UK then it's not legal not to have one. I had mine in the windscreen of my Polo at one stage as I'd had the bumper strips removed and smoothed.

The police liked it so much they pulled me over and handed me a £30 fine, lesson learnt that day!

You would need a new grill as the plate holder on the oem one is part of the grill, you can buy an American oem grill which doesn't have the holder or get an rs honeycombe one from the likes of xuk, there's. Even a few folk with the Dmb graphics stick on plates that have had a pull from the rozzers recently, apparently the plate needs to clearly readable from a certain angle

I saw someone in an A4 iirc recently, they had put the plate on the left hand side of the front of the car. It just looked weird.

Someone I know with an RS3, got pulled all of the time with a small front plate and now he hasn't got one... he's never been pulled! Madness

I've been told it's a £60 fine, but you can only have so many before the DVLA take back your registration (if private).

I believe that rule is more for altering the plate to read something it looks like. The dvla are good at selling plates that COULD read something with a bit of playing around, the max fine is £1000 or you lose the right to the plate. I had my old one photographed by the police when I got pulled over.

Ah right I see, yes the DVLA definitely sell/show Plates as something they aren't meant to be.
The photograph was probably for the DVLA, I believe you get a few warnings before losing rights to it.

It's either £60 or £100 fine now, can't remember whether it went up to £100 with the other fines. If the plate is misrepresented, then the DVLA can remove and issue you a standard plate, once they receive evidence of it.

Not worth it in my opinion, much better things to spend my money on. You may not get stopped for ages, but it will happen eventually.

I am thinking of removing the surround and getting a 100% legal, shortened plate because my plate is 1 character shorter.

I think it depends on what car you have which gets you pulled over. I have been pulled for no front plate on a Corsa and Golf before. These can be seen as chavvy cars I suppose as they were both modfied.

I then had an M3 which I was never pulled for. Another mate with a 325i and never pulled. And a couple of mates with 458 and Huracan that will probably never get pulled for no front plate. The police probably see it as more work for them, then for you to pay out the fine.

Mine sits on the side, not to everyone's taste but I like it;

Any probs with the OB and getting pulled?

No issues with getting pulled as it is a legal plate, spacing is correct and numbers are the right size

On the subject of spacing of characters on plates, I saw one at my local supermarket car park a few weeeks ago on a Honda Accord. The number was something like Y210 MFG. The first three characters might have been something different, but it doesn't matter because it's that last four that matter. The front plate was arranged like this:

Y21
OMFG

I thought ' how chavtastic is that'

Best I've seen is U N08 HED lol

I ran with no front plate on an Impreza for a few years, not pulled once + I got to fly through roadworks with front facing camera's! Your risk though as it is illegal so could get tugged and fined.
