Time to consider a family-mobile! Opinions please? And yes it is relevant to 8V owners...

Our family car (the wife’s) is a Hyundai Tucson sport pre reg 22k comes with 5 yes warranty and AA cover and sits between the Q3 and Q5 size wise and also comes in Ara blue ....

@batch - Or how about a Golf R estate on a lease deal ?
I missed out by 2 hours on a MY18 Golf R DSG estate on a 2 year lease deal @ £275/month with no deposit
The leasing company sold their allocation in 4 hours at this price
Still, there's bound to be more similar deals available me thinks

Definitely would consider - only thing is I can't get on board with the estates!

Mate I really don't think we can justify two cars - hence why the one would ideally be nice!
Clare flat-out refused to go look at a fully-loaded 335xD touring this morning, going SO cheap too, from a main dealer. And I'm getting more keen on one!

@batch - I know what you mean about estates mate. I'm the same TBH
But at that price I think I could forgive the Golf R estate for its slightly fugly looks lol

Jag XFS, loads of room in the back for a couple of kids, and build quality is great. Boot that fits 2 large and 2 small suitcases. Works well as our family car...even on 20's the ride is more comfortable than the S4 with adaptive suspension:

If you want a bit more fun than go for the XFR....

S4 MRC Stage 2+ gone
Stealth Black XFS now more sensible :)

I'm on my 4th A3/S3 sportback and I've always thought it to be the perfect family car.
My son's 19 now but I just love the all round practicality of it.
I remember when my son was still in single figures we camped in Cornwall for a week and we took
The main tent (which was huge)
A matching day tent
2 of those big blow up aerobeds
All the other camping gear (there was loads trust me!)
2 suitcases of clothes
His bike
The "neighbours" in the field couldn't believe it all came in the sportback.
If your looking to move on mate its because you fancy a change, not because the cars too small lol!

Mate.....its probably is a clone of Ara....without the big crystals poppers...the Koreans....are not be trusted....they copy absolutely everything....they dont have a ounce of originality in them,my sister has a Kia ....whatever...and its the clone of Sepang in most lights....but doesnt have the purple tone in it....so yeah it it's more than likely the spitting image of Ara....

I’m a car nut and work in the industry and am seriously impressed. NVH and ride comfort massively improved over the IX35 she had before. The sport model that the wife has is very well equipped the bigger wheels, full grey perforated leather seats, all seats heated, drone seats electrically adjusted with rear seats that manually recline. Also has 7 or 8 inch nav screen running proper TomTom maps (no in-house effort), lane departure, privacy glass, front and rear parking sensors and rear camera.

We have the same engine that pulls well to overtake and cruises nicely at speed. Think the premium has a few more extras xenon lights being one if I remember correctly.

Korean Daytona LoL :tearsofjoy:

Good to hear, she's always had Fiestas & Focus before so the obvious choice had been the Kuga, but the Tucson nailed it on spec.

I can't understand why people buy Quashqais - the dullest, blandest, most uninvolving thing I've ever had the misfortune to drive.

And quite often owned by some of the worse drivers on the road IMHO

With the arrival of baby H the 3 door really didn't work! (Baby seat goes in at an angle and with the rear facing car seat base the front seat needed to go far too forward. (A fitting session with John Lewis showed how stupid our 3 door car had become)

So echo the benefits of buying a car for use every day - and not for the family holidays.

The solution - not a Q car but the beautiful A3 saloon. We looked at so many different cars but came back to a familiar drive with the benefit of facelift

Looked at SUV's myself, the new X-Trail out next month, new Honda CRV out end of the year and the new XC60 out soon, so some good deal on old/pre reg stock!

Even looked at the new Tekna+ Qashqai that has everything on it and comes in well under £30k

So I went for an arranged test drive yesterday at 1pm at Hyundai, it was going to be in the new petrol turbo engine Tuscon that had just come in. I got there at 12.55 and the guy I'd seen was busy with another customer, so I looked at the other cars in the showroom and then stood there waiting for someone to come over, two sales guys were flirting with the two young girls on reception! Once they'd finished one guy walked off and into the back, the other guy looked at me got his mobile out and started playing on it whilst leaning on the reception desk! Then one of the receptionist looked at me, picked her mobile up and started playing with it! The other one just sat that gazing at the salesman. The original guy who I'd gone to see went outside and got in a car and drove off with the customer he was with!! I'd been in there for 15 minutes and was getting slightly annoyed! So I went into the office at the back and asked for the manager, it turned out that he was the guy that saw me pull up in my S3. I told him what had happened and how I thought that it was completely unprofessional, he fully agreed and was clearly not happy :) I told him to forget it, he was groveling like anything to put it right, but I just said "No, they have annoyed me too much and if that's your pre sales service I'd hate to see the after sales service, what did they think I was doing standing there, waiting for a bus?" :D As I left the car park I could see him at the reception not looking very happy with the phone users :D

So then I nipped into Honda the next showroom down to look at the CRV and HRV, I looked at a few cars and then a sales guy came over and asked if I needed any help. So I tell him that I'm thinking about going more practical and give him the reasons etc. He asked me what I was currently driving and we had a chat about the S3 as his mate had one bla bla bla. So after about 15 minutes I end up walking out booked in for a test drive in a few weeks time in a new Civic Type R :wtf: thinking how the hell did that happen??? lmao :D Go in looking at a sensible car and end up booked in for one of the most bonkers cars out!!!

You were nearly right mate so close to buying an Ara blue Sportback black ed fully loaded ish ex demo 3 months old and 45k on the configurator last Saturday but they wouldn’t quite get to where I wanted to be - car was up for 39k. Then I found out how much car tax I’d be paying that added another £30 a month into the mix.

What really killed it off was that the seat bolster creases were worse than on my car and I could have bought new minus carwow discount for a very similar price.

@batch if you can get over car seperation anxiety (ie. going the estate route) then an SUV is definitely the way to go for a family in my opinion....there's lots to choose from that need not be expensive (German) but if you can stretch to just a basic Q5 they handle well and are not slow...best interior blah blah....once you've had an SUV you won't look at them the same again...just need to take the plunge...best of luck choosing bud :)

I'm no SUV fan, but I do think about them from time to time. Having owned people carriers when the family were growing up, I got to enjoy the high ride position and I like cars with good load carrying capacity (hence the current A4 Avant). So, given that I occasionally look at SUVs in a 'yeah, maybe' kind of way, I like the look of the Tucson. There's one at the end of our road in that ersatz Ara blue and I always give it a good look over as I drive past. I shall be interested to hear how your wife gets on with hers.

Just come back from South Wales in ours...5hr trip and I didn't do the motorway as we got stuck on the way there on motorways. Lots of sweeping Welsh hills and valleys.
S3 Sportback really is all you need with one kid. Our lad is 3 and we have him in a massive Cybex Sirona rear facing seat that takes up a lot of room. The S3 Sportback is great inside. We had a big suitcase in the boot and his balance bike...loads of other stuff too. If we had another addition to the team, I think we'd either go for the roof box or the S4 Avant...but is the S4 Avant as fast?

I had to sell my Porsche and M4 with the arrival of my second and have ended up with an S4 Avant and S3. I think the S4 is a great family wagon. Doesn't feel too big and my wife hasn't yet destroyed any of the wheels, which is frankly remarkable.

An A3 is plenty large enough for a couple and one or two young children. I would think that a 5 door (Sportback) would definitely be the model to go for - 3 door would not be convenient.

This^^

It always makes me chuckle when you see new parents go and buy the biggest car they can for one or two kids. It's totally unnecessary.

When my girls were born we had a ****** Ford Escort and for the second one a ****** Ford Mondeo, but the point is that both were plenty big enough. Most cars can accommodate a couple of kids car seats, and the boot a pushchair.

When my youngest was 8 and eldest was 14 I purchased a new Fabia vRS. Again, plenty big enough. I had that superb car for 14 years and not once was space an issue.

Trust me, having kids does not mean that you need to go and buy a double decker bus, It's complete overkill.

Yep, we're coping fine (one child) with a 6R Polo and an S3 Saloon.
